GW;-RO CCO A.CR1S Uwho oevnrfo mi'TO MOWS L v rs m THFJR STRl; FOR SOClAv. %u00bbWftv 'BY CORRINE COLEMANRisorgiamento was the key word at the June 13 ceremonies opening the CIAO Day Care Center on 292 Court St. %u2014 a resurgence of spirit in relation to expansion of neighborhood social services under the guidance of the local Italian community and a renaissance of creativity in the entire South Brooklyn area.The pre-school center was in planning and construction for more than three years by such members of the Congress of ItalianAmerican Organizations and the Carroll Gardens Association as Mary Sansone, Buddy Scotto, Sal Ferraioli, Joe Bruno, Richard Leotta and Assemblyman Mike Pesce. The project was the subject of inordinate delay. After long consideration, then final OK of the project, the building originally set to house the all day center was declared unavailable. Restoration of the site finally chosen %u2014 the old Paris Court Theater between Kane and DeGraw Sts. (on Court St) %u2014 took months longer than expected.However, the long wait did not deter from the joy at last week%u2019s dedication which took place in the immaculate meeting rooms on the third floor of the building.The crowd of celebrants including local officials City Councilman Tom Cuite, State Representatives Carol Bellam y and Mike Pesce, South Brooklyn Task Force Chairman Sam Azadian as well as Manhattan Assemblyman Tony Olivieri and Mayoralty candidate, Congressman Herman Badillo (who was followed by a myriad of reporters, still and TV cameramen and wild applause) heard prayers by Reverend George T. Voiland of St. Mary%u2019s Star of the Sea Church and Reverend Neville SimmonsSmith of the South Congregational Church and speeches by CIAO luminaries Mary Sansone and Buddy Scotto which emphasized the social service focus of the Italian organization and the determination of the center%u2019s sponsors to reach the pre-school children from all community groups.After an intermission for dancing to the three piece band hired for the occasion, sampling the plentiful supply of food and drink, and exploring the adjacent children%u2019s rooms which were already furnished with tables, chairs, cots and a supply of toys and books, the guests at the celebration were introduced to theDedication ceremonies were held on June 13 at the CIAO Day Care Center, 292 Court Street prior to the opening next month of this new child care facility. Rooney will begin on June 30. The grant is part of a continuing program established between LIU and HEW to aid physically and emotionally handicapped students who possess the ability to enter and complete college but who, because of their disability, may not have been properly prepared for it.Presently, the University has 214 such students with another 140 scheduled for admission this year.
