Page Ten PHOENIX June 21, 1973Japanese Gardens Open TodayThe Brooklyn Botanic Garden announces the opening of a new Garden Complex. Included in this area is the Ryoanji Temple Stone Garden %u2014 a replica of a 500-yearold Zen meditation garden in Kyoto, Japan.Adjacent to the Stone Garden is a newly landscaped Roji Garden, or Dew Path %u2014 also a Japanese style garden. The Dew Path leads into the Tallman Memorial Dwarf Plant Garden including slowgrowing and compact varieties of deciduous and evergreen plants suitable for landscape use. This newest complex of gardens within the larger Botanic Garden opens to the public on June 21 and will remain open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. until the end of October. The Ryoanji Garden is approximately the size of a tennis court and includes the facade to the Zen Temple, Ryoanji, with the traditional arrangement of rocks in threes, fives, and sevens placed on a bed of ripple-raked stones to simulate the sea. This is a garden without trees, shrubs, or other plants with theexception of purely incidental moss growing around the rocks. The total effect is one of abstract art. It is a sanctuary for contemplation. The concept of symbolism in placement of rocks and ripple-raked stone is a Japanese introduction to the Western world. To maintain the aura of quiet meditation, each visitor must wear slippers, which will be distributed at the entrance. The Roji Garden, or Dew Path, is comprised of plants that thrive in a moist atmosphere and soil. Mosses, ferns, and wet-site shrubs line the winding pathway that introduces yet another idea in Japanese gardening%u2014 that of never seeing the entire garden from one view. To appreciate the Roji Garden fully one must walk the meandering path and see what lies beyond each graceful curve. To western eyes this presents an effective new means of using a small space. The path defines a garden that appears to be much larger than it really is.The Tallman Memorial Dwarf Plant Garden was started in 1959, following a bequest by Mrs. JohnTallman. It now contains some ot the finest mature specimens of slow growing trees and shrubs in New York. Plants are groupedaccording to botanical relationships for easy reference and are clearly labeled. Varieties of plants in this collection provide an intimate and elegant array of landscape maieriai ihai. is easy lu maintain and requires little, if any, pruning.Entrance to the three adjacent Ryoanji-Roji-Tallman Gardens is 25 cents. Admission is free to the Botanic Garden grounds at all times.
