A hand painted sign in earth colors marks the spot.Supplying everything but %u201c clothing and dog food,%u2019%u2019 though without a pot bellied stove, the ambience at Brooklyn Country is warm and lively, with customers, most of whom have become Francine%u2019s friends, encouraged to choose, weigh, wrap and add for themselves.Cluttered but neat, the place is arrayed with huge old fashioned glass jars, inside which are herbs, spices, dried fruit; apples, pineapples, apricots, dates, raisins and figs. Walnuts, cashews, almonds, make up part of the nut selection. Soybeans, black beans, sesame and sunflower seeds fill the gleaming containers.Vitamins, books by Adelle Davis, Natural Food magazines, adorn the shelves against the walls.Cooking utensils, restaurant crockery in classic shapes; perfect pitchers and bowls, abound. Soap from Finland, Italy, Germany, England and China, not often found in smaller shops, can be found at Brooklyn Country.Fresh fruit and vegetables, exotic teas, prune and peach, apple and plum butter, honey wheat, honey granola, and just honey, are part of the regular stock.Amid the Scandinavian wafers; the Swedish crispbread, Norwegian flatbread, and the Finncrisp, Francine flies about the store, greeting the Pratt students, the Clinton Hill couples, the local men and women who have found the shop a center %u2014 a neighborhood focal point.Though organic food is the rule, Francine weighs the prices, and rejects the exorbitant %u2014 organic or not. %u201c I try not to be buffaloed by the organic mystique. Don't look to me for health,\warns, and adds that her questions still outnumber her answers. %u201c Food is not the salvation. All I can recommend is plenty of reststarting from typical food habits rather than from superimposed dicta.Future plans for Brooklyn Country include a small lunch counter for serving salads, carrot juices, and home made cakes, and perhaps an outdoor set up for coffee and desserts %u2014 in the backyard which resembles a Charleston garden. The store, which can be reached via the 38 and 61 buses, and the GG subway to the Clinton-Washington Aves. stop, is open from noon to 6:30 p.m. from Mon. to Sat. Phone 857-1990 or 783-8394. Though deliveries will be made, Brooklyn Country should be seen.cfOv.LL>.QOOrQ.Xzw01 Q.Francine Frank in Brooklyn Countryand good times.%u201dNevertheless Francine Frank digs her immersion in Westphalian pumpernickel, soy oil, whole wheat and artichoke spaghetti, natural juices, yogurt and cheeses of all sorts.%u201c I always felt that comes the depression you get yourself a grocery store,%u201d she says, explaining that after she gave up her dress designing career, the food business seemed to suggest a more stable way of life.Further relating to the depression, Francine bought a pushcart during the beginning days of the store about two years ago, and took her wares to Montague and other streets around the Heights. %u201c I gotkicked off the streets and then moved to the local fairs.%u201d Last year%u2019s fiesta on the Atlantic Ave. pier was a high point, she reveals. In a unique procedure, Francine returned her cooperators%u2019 investments of $50., in food from the store. Food was also exchanged for legal work, bookkeeping and carpentry. Last year, the Clinton Hill entrepreneur gave a cooking course for Pratt students whose tuitions were paid by work in the store one day per month. While the City%u2019s voluntary and proprietary hospitals are operating at close to full capacity only three out of every four beds inthe municipal hospitals are occupied. Despite this fact the Mayor%u2019s expense budget asks the City Council to allocate money not only to fund the existing underutilized facilities but in addition requests 25 million dollars to open new facilities.%u201c While allocating this money to solve the health problem may be of some merit, there has to be a consideration of priorities in the budget. It must be remembered that this is the year of an austerity budget, property owners are being asked to pay severely higher taxes while the Health and Hospitals Corporation continues to underutilize its facilities.%u201d| Spencer Parent Co-op Nursery Schoolj and Day Care Center?
