The walls are decorated with posters of such black heroes as George Jackson and Angela Davis plus glossy photos of musicians. The upright piano sits off the stage under a bookshelf, and Cowell alternated between it and his own electric piano. The sound system is unexpectedly good.Tolliver didn%u2019t announce anytunes but one of the pieces played was an up tempo version of Thelonious Monk%u2019s %u201c Round Midnight,%u201d on which Tolliver improvised on the chords for awhile before the theme was actually stated. Drummer Philip Wilson%u2019s group also played and I was able to hear the last two numbers in their first set. Throughout the last number the rhythm section played an over busy repetitious rhythmic figure under the soloists. But the soloists, especially the excellent trombone player, were amusing in the way they played with it, imitated it, and finally rebelled against it.This weekend Phil Wilson%u2019s group will return along with the featured group, Sonny Fortune. Fortune, the saxophonist recently heard with the McCoy Tyrter Quartet, will be recorded live on Sat., June23, from 9 p.m. till 2 a.m. Admission is $3.
