Page Four PHOENIX June 28,1973Theater of M adness FusesBY CORRINE COLEMANA clashing %u2014 a fusion %u2014 of sound and light %u2014 of movement, the Theater of Madness offers some sanity %u2014 certainly some truth %u2014 and a round of laughs during Friday and Saturday night performances at its waterfront center %u201cThe Bank,%u201d near the F'ulton Ferry at 1 Front St.%u201cSurrealm,%u201d the current theater piece of Sana tea Productions, the Madness group, is a neo-DadaNada potpourri of live theater, film, music and dance out of %u201cPapa I%u2019bu,%u201d Jarry%u2019s early French absurdist originalBeginning with a traditional devotional scene candles, habit and prayer, which reverses into orgiastic writhing with rock. \shirtless Uncle Sam, the rapist, spraying fluff at the audience, and with movie touches of the world today shakes, blasts and gases. A Roger Reality looking like Michael J. Pollard passes out varicolored balloons which almost immediately break; by accident and design.The Brooklyn %u201cson and lumiere,%u201d moves with masque and cymbal synthesizer and light show-and a walled contraption like a baby%u2019s touch box. Puccini%u2019s music from Madame Butterfly is juxtaposed with more recent Japanese scenes and a Mr. McGoo cartoon (with the nearsighted righteous one caught on the edge of an airplane%u2019s wing is played along with that arch type song of American make believe %u201cWhen I Marry Mr. Snow.%u201d ) (From Rogers and llammerstein%u2019s %u201cCarousel%u201d ) At the end a truthsayer rises %u2014 from a toilet bowl %u2014 holding out a microphone plunger wrapped in toilet paper.A pop-slop vision of now amidst some quick images of purity, the Theater pf Madness%u2019 %u201cSurrealm,%u201d is presented to an audience propped comfortably on back seat cushions, by such cast members as Cosmo Ohms (also one of the producers), Dr. Dosa Tooner, Captain Metronome, Gail Greenberg and Robin Tisch. The group met in Hawaii and spent four years putting on theatricals in that 50th state. They moved to the 105- year-old bank building last March.%u201cSurrealm%u201d is one of a variety of productions in the Sana tea Company%u2019s bag, which includes children%u2019s puppet theater, live music and film showings. Hoping also to see the recently renovated building evolve into a Brooklyn arts center, the group is inviting local musicians, filmmakers, artists of all sorts to call and begin discussion of plans for the future. For information phone 855-6419.Minority PhotographsOn Exhibit at LIU%u201c In Search of Meaning,%u201d a new photo exhibit in a current series entitled Communications 1973 by Minority Photographers, Inc., will be on display from July 3 to 30 at The Brooklyn Center of Long Island University, Flatbush Ave. Ext. at DeKalb Ave. The exhibit will be on view in the Humanities Building lobby gallery from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday.The emphasis of the exhibit, which features the work of the members of Minority Photographers Inc., is on intercommunications of photographers from many different areas of thought. %u201c Its purpose is to bring together many fragmented thoughts %u2014 to give meaning to an unknown phenomenon and to explain the mood of the photographer as they relate to their reality.
