June 28,1973 PHOENIXFortune Q uarteti '/%u25a0'at Swope Limited Plays %u2019Hard Bop'BY ANTHONY COLEMANOn June 23, Swope Limited presented the Sonny Fortune Quartet at the Loft at 70-78 Willoughby St. in Downtown Brooklyn. Perform ers were Fortune on alto saxophone, Wayne )Dockery on bass; Eddie Martinez on piano; and Bill Roy on drums. The two sets consisted of what used to be known as %u201cHard-Bop,%u201d (a somewhat more contemporary version of Bop-the style of jazz that was prevalent in the late 40%u2019s'. The tunes that were played included some Bop standards (Love For Sale, Body and Soul, Thelonious Monk%u2019s Epistrophy) interspersed with originals. This was a throwback from the freer, more %u201cmodern%u201d music that Fortune was playing until recently with Pianist McCoy Tyner%u2019s Quartet. How'ever, the extremely energetic playing of Tyner and his Drummer Alphonse Mouzoun sometimes tended to obscureFortune%u2019s work and-or reduce it to a series of shrill screams. Here, he played thoughtfully and well.Drummer Phil Wilson%u2019s group also performed, but with a basically different band than he had at last week%u2019s concert at The Loft. The music was a lot freer than at the last concert. The Tenor Saxophonist (who I believe played last week as welD was excellent. Wilson%u2019s rhythm section followed its own way with the Saxophonist following his own at the same time. Fortune%u2019s rhythm section was more supportive. This was the second concert that Swope Limited presented at The Loft. The sound system and atmosphere were excellent as before. Phil Wilson will continue to produce concerts at The Loft but Swope Limited will be moving to a coffee shop in Manhattan where they will produce similar concerts. For information call Swope - 671- 6772.LIU Center HoldingFree Sports ProgramFree sports instruction, games, healthful recreation, human enrichment activities and daily luncheon will be provided for up to 300 Fort Greene youngsters %u2014 boys and girls, 10 to 14 %u2014 who will participate in the fifth annual National Summer Youth Sports Program, starting Thursday, July 5, at The Brooklyn Center of Long Island University.According to Jerry Donner, LIU%u2019s Acting Director of Athletics, registration for the program will be through June 28. %u201cThe only requirement is that each applicant take a physical on July 2, 3 or 5,%u201d Donner stated.
