Nineteen detainees who had volunteered %u2014 starting last February %u2014 to attend four-hour-aweek basic reading courses in an available room at the court facility, will step up to receive certificates showing they had achieved substantial improvements in reading skills, some of them making gains of up to three years growth in reading levels. The instruction was made possible through efforts of New York'City Community College%u2019s Division of Continuing Education, which organized the course and trained a number of detainees who had excellent reading skills to be effective tutors. What the educational programhas meant to the detainees was explained in a letter written to the college by a 28-year-old man who is now in an upstate correctional institution, but who had been in the Brooklyn facility for several months while making an appeal of his conviction.%u201cI felt good inside being able to help someone else. Thanks for the chance to prove to myself that I could be of some use in this world.%u201dThe letter was written to John Mogulescu, a community projectassistant at the college, who together with Prof. Judith McGaughey, of the Division of Continuing Education, had organized the unusual project.
