Victor Herd, chairman ofthe Brooklyn Women%u2019s Division,presided over the business portionof the meeting, and presentedHeart of Gold Citations to threeladies who are each marking theirtenth anniversary as Heart Fundvolunteers: Miss GertrudeOldaker, Mrs. Martin J. Kelly, Jr.,and Mrs. William D. Ready.Mrs. Joseph Schluger, chairmanof the Benefit Committee of theBrooklyn Women%u2019s Division,reported next on the Art-Auctionheld November 12 at the PackerCollegiate Institute. Approximately $1,500 was realizedfrom the sale of paintings, contributions, and ticket sales.Dr. Edwin P. Maynard Jr.director of Development at theBrooklyn Hospital, and a long-timeresident of the Borough, then introduced the featured speaker, Dr.Joseph Schluger. Dr. Schluger,who is director of the CardiacCatheterization Laboratory at theLong Island College Hospital,spoke most enthusiastically aboutthe role of the New York HeartAssociation in cardiovascularresearch, explaining that NewYork 1973 Heart Fund CampaignOpens in Brooklyn.Heart had been responsible forthe standardization of digitalis,and for supporting research insuch areas as myocardial induction, studies of the mechanismof myocardial contraction, anddevelopment of the SGOT test formyocardial infarction. Thebusiness meeting was followed bya tea and the distribution ofcampaign kits to the committeemembers.. . He brought in high schoolstudents from Arizona to pick themelons and put them up at anexpensive motel and fed themthree meals a day,%u201d Rizza stated.Not an %u201coutside agitator,%u201d Rizzawas born in the Bensonhurstsection of the borough, where helived until he moved to California11 years ago. Back in Brooklyn foronly a month, he said that he andhis wife have been carrying UFWsigns in high traffic areas such asthe streets around Borough Hall atrush hour. On Saturdays they hitthe streets trying to get peopleftosign letters urging the A&P corporate managers to buy UFWlettuce, he said.%u201cBecause A&P is one of thelargest in New York, we are tryingfor a chain decision,%u201d he said,adding that in the West Safewaywas the target. Rizza said that ifthese techniques were not effective, then a secondary boycottof certain A&P stores might beorganized.Atlantic Ave. A&P StoreManager A. MacGregor said hisstore sells %u201cunion%u201d lettuce exceptwhen they buy local New Jerseylettuce. A check of the lettucecrates on Tuesday revealed thatthe %u201cunion%u201d lettuce was Teamsters, not UFW.Supporters of the lettuce boycottfeel that buying Teamsters lettuceis almost as bad as buying nonunion lettuce because the Teamsters. they say. are undercuttingUFW%u2019s effort to organize Chicanolettuce workers.For a while, the producemanager at the A&P said, the storedisplayed the Teamsters bug overthe lettuce counter. He took itdown, he said, after receiving anumber of complaints. He deniedever posting the UFW bug, asRizza alleged. However, he did saythat depending on the shipment, hesometimes received UFW lettuce,at other times Teamsters, andothers non-union lettuce.Rent MeetingOn Wednesday evening, Jan. 31at 8 p.m., the Park Slope CivicCouncil will sponsor a program onlandlord-tenant law, rent controland rent decontrol at the BrooklynSociety for Ethical CultureMeeting House, 53 Prospect ParkWest (corner of 2nd St).
