It wasn%u2019t red tape that caused the 86-year delay; it was the absence of male students.Berkeley Institute was charted in 1886 as a school for young ladies, and it was not until 1972, when its Upper School was opened to males, that the school became completely co-ed.The presence of men at Berkeley has resulted in many firsts: High school students joined the annual father-son dinner, held Jan. 19, for the first time and a basketball team and cheer leading squad has been formed to carry Berkeley on to athletic glory.Since September 1972, Berkeley has admitted boys to their ninth and tenth grades, and their presence, according to Headmisstress Susan Miller, has added an exciting dimension to the life of the school. The annual father-son dinner has traditionally combined dinner and demonstration under the guidance and sponsorship of the school%u2019s athletic department. Following the welcoming address, Scott Jarmus and Jeffery Nehrbas, new tenth graders, reported on the school%u2019s first boys%u2019 basketball team. The team, consisting of Jeff Nehrbas, Steven Carter, Joseph Carter, Rodney Murphy, Brook Bickford, Scott Larry Crehan, Jeff Fagan and Jimmy Quigley, played the first of its series of scheduled interscholastic games on January 10 against Poly Prep Country Day School. Future games include a game against Adelphi on February 5 and 14, and a rertiateh against Poly Prep on February 26.In new yellow and black skirts and sweaters and cheering the new team on are Debbie Bath, CarolynIncome Ta xFREE 15-MINUTECONFERENCETo discuss tax services, ideas, review a tax return, answer questions.
