The school, opened in 1892, is closing because of Its sponsors, the Brooklyn YWCA and the Brooklyn Hospital, can no longer afford to run the nursing school.Although 80 years of service ends officially the thousands of practical nurses who graduated from the nurses school and who are still serving the sick in homes and hospitals throughout our country are a constant reminder of a job well done. Mrs. John J. Madden, chairman of the Practical Nursing Committee and YWCA Board Member, commented on the finale of this important function in Brooklyn, both at the YWCA and the Brooklyn Hospital, where students did their clinical work, saying %u201c It%u2019s a sad day for Brooklyn.%u201dThe graduation exercises were held Wednesday, Jan. 24.The same thought was reflected by Dr. Edwin Maynard, wellknown heart specialist and resident of Brooklyn, who will give the graduation address. He praises the school staff: Miss Esau, who has served for 23 years; Mrs. Ruth Finkelstein, 15 years; and Mrs.Gena Chaney, 14 years. Mrs. Madden further stated, %u201c During all these happy years of educating young and older women in a great use to the community and to humanity, there was scarcely any absenteeism by this devoted trio with only a few days off for death in the family or personal accident. What a record they have made, what an inspiration they have been to the continuous stream of young and older women who chose practical nursing as a profession.%u201dRev. Richard Francis, pastor of the John St. Methodist Church, Manhattan, will give the invocation and the benediction. While director of the Brooklyn Protestant Council, which was housed in the YWCA building, he became a friend and counselor to the staff and students in the Nursing School.Brooklyn people may ask, %u201c Why did this School close?%u201d The answer is financial both with the Brooklyn YWCA and the Brooklyn Hospital. But in truth the school%u2019s use to the community will never stop so long as one of the graduates works at her chosen profession. With both joy and sorrow friends of the school salute the 104 new graduates who will carry on the splendid tradition established by the Brooklyn School of Practical Nursing.Stephen Folkson Woodrow Self Margaret Potenza Leroy Canadythe appointment of Stephen hospital%u2019s in-service training Puerto Rico, who formerly worked Folkson as Community Relations program.
