Nothing is further from the truth. Metnodist, besides ' disrupting the community with its plans, has given us a plan that will do nothing to improve health services to the people of the Slope.%u201dThe Pratt Institute Center for Community and Environmental Development report is actually a critical review of the Urban Design Associates proposal and plan for Methodist Hospital. It finds the Methodist proposal to be substantially unsupported by any hard data in any of its major conclusions. The report is especially critical of the hospital%u2019s expansionplans%u2019 total lack of health planning.%u201cThere has been no health study or determination of the healthneeds of the area...so there is no means of evaluating any of the specific proposals,%u201d it said. %u201cNo detailed breakdown of medical, administrative or service space in the present or future hospital is given.%u201dIn light of the fact that the hospital conducted no health study of Park Slope, the Health Task Force has resolved to do its own study and development plans for a health system that will meet community needs.Yvette Shiffman, the health planner for the study, will be engaged in the project with the help of other concerned professionals. The plan will next deal with a determination of the actual health needs of the community and follow that with an exposition of available means for meeting those needs.Poetry Circle Gives A w a rd1The Brooklyn Poetry Circle, a poetry writing workshop which holds monthly meetings at the home of the secretary and reader, Gabrielle Lederer, 61 Pierrepont St., recently gave its Virginia MacFarlane Award to Thomas Lopez of Fort Hamilton High School. The award is given each year to a high school student for creative writing and poetry. In addition to the $10 cash award, the winner is entitled to a year%u2019s membership in the Brooklyn Poetry Circle. The MacFarlane Award was given at the group%u2019s Christmas Party held December 14 at theFirst Presbyterian Church, Henry St. Also honored was Mrs. Mildred Hoyer, immediate past president, who was given a gitt in appreciation for her years of service as vice president and president.Poems from 12 books authored by Brooklyn Poetry Circle members were read, concluding with the poem, %u201cThe Final Word,%u201d from the book COMMUNION which was written by Natalie Lederer and published in 1970. Poetry Circle member Gertrude Ryder Bennett%u2019s recently published work, Ballads of Colonial Days, was still in the mails and could not be read.Gays St Straights Can RelateContinued from Page 7number books which suggest how we should relate to one another as human beings on the deepest and most intimate levels. As a society we foster the growth of violence much more than we promote the growth of love.Gays and straights have been made to feel that their worlds cannot touch openly and that they have so little in common that attempts at friendship are doomed to failure. This is no more than propoganda %u2014 my experience reconfirms the belief that being a couple, sharing the joys and pains of loving, wooing, winning, losing, and living together, is a human experience common to all those who love. A couple goes through various stages in its life as a couple, regardless of the sex of the partners. Admittedly there are areas of difference which probably cannot be shared, but this is equally true of most friendships we form during our addlt lives and we should not let these differences discourage us.It would be phony to insist that when straights come to accept the intellectual arguments given above they will no longer feel uptight about the outward expression of feeling between members of the same sex. We have been well conditioned in this attitude, arid we will have to condition ourselves out of it. We should realize, however, that exposure to any unfamiliar situation or behavior which we have been protected from seeing or prevented from experiencing produces similar discomfort. If we are willing to permit and to encourage such expression, with repeated exposure the unfamiliar will come to feel quite ordinary to us.It is hard to prescribe where to begin turning around a social pattern which has been operating for centuries. Maybe it begins simply with responding to one%u2019s neighbors as the gay couple next door instead of the gay couple next door %u2014 with resisting the impulse to categorize and to emphasize difference. Perhaps one starting point for straights who are sincerely concerned about creating a more open community is to encourage a straight organization in the community to contact a local gay organization to open up dialogue on ways and means of closing the gap between the groups on mutually acceptable terms. Perhaps it means opening up community social events such as dances to individuals of all sexual persuasions and really meaning it %u2014 and hoping that some gays are willing to take a chance on us. At any rate, with so many areas of our lives and our world out of our control, this is one pattern that we do have the ability to change, and we should seize that opportunity Finally, one very small way we can begin to turn our society around is to remind ourselves often that whether people make it as people matters far more than how they %u201cmake it%u201d in bed.Ms. Feingold is a free lance writer living in Cobble Hill.IATA 522-7330' TLNCJO I M mALL CREIT CARDS HONOREDALFREDO ASENCIO MARIA ASEN CIOI73 COURT STREET BROOKLYN, N Y IK
