March 7,1974 PHOENIX Page 17Continued from Page 12minutes of Ms. Finney%u2019s remarks, announced his candidacy in at least equally vigorous and eloquent terms.Given the realities of newspaper deadlines, this gross omission can perhaps be explained on the basis that the story went to press before the meeting actually took place. But if this is so, then what the reporter has done is attempt to pass off as hard news a press release %u201cleaked%u201d by the candidate. The failure of the reporter to make clear that the story was a rewrite of a release rather than on the spot coverage of hard news gives a completely inaccurate picture of what happened at the CBID meeting.Unfortunately, there is another possible explanation for the way the story was covered: that the reporter intentionally attempted to favor Ms. Finney%u2019s candidacy. The fact that this story was the only major item without a byline, the fact that a reporter for the Phoenix who has covered political matters was present at the meeting and the fact that the name of that reporter appears in a paid advertisement supporting Ms. Finney on page 7 of the same edition may be coincidental. But taken together they create a disquieting impression of journalistic dishonesty.Joe Ferris is more than capable of presenting the merits of his candidacy to the community. Nevertheless, I believe it is incumbent on the Phoenix to investigate this chain of events thoroughly and to report promptly to the community.Very truly yours,L. J. Goodwin 839 President St.Editors Note: The story was, indeed, prepared in advance of the meeting since at the time of the meeting the paper was at the printers being prepared. There was no PHOENIX reporter present at the meeting, and the story carried no byline because it was excerpted from an advance prepared statement. No PHOENIX reporter%u2019s name appeared in the advertisement mentioned. Mr. Ferris prior to the meeting had not indicated his intention to announce his candidacy to us and if he had that would have been included in the story.
