April 11, 1974 PHOENIX P**e S* i . u r e e n e /C l i n t o n H i l lChoice PickingsWhen my friend Louise Greene first moved to Fort Greene, her neighbors advised her not to shop in the neighborhood. %u2018 %u2018They said none of the shops would have what I%u2019d want anyway. So for a while I was going to Brooklyn Heights to shop, until the day I just got tired of lugging packages and kids such a long distance. So Idecided to take the plunge and shop in the neighborhood. What I%u2019ve discovered is that 1 have my choice of five supermarkets, five or more fresh fish stores, florists, gift shops, record stores, thrift shops, discount stores, restaurants and coffee shops, clothing stores, and virtually anything else I might need, except a really good bookstore.%u201dNow, two years later, Louise wouldn%u2019t dream of leaving the neighborhood to shop, unless she absolutely can%u2019t find it here-which is rare. With Fulton Street being revived commercially near the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and with Myrtle and DeKalb Avenues thriving, more and more people are discovering one of New York%u2019s fine residential neighborhoods. Some of them have come here to live, and others enjoy coming here to shop. Either way, we at THE PHOENIX expect that very soon Fort Greene/ Clinton Hill will rival the diverse and exciting shopping streets of Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope.BY DAN ICOLARIWe applaud this trend, and support it with the inauguration of our new FORT GREENE/CLINTON HILL SHOPPING PAGE.Yes, but' to UnitFor Mental HealthTaking positions on community issues would be a lot easier if we had elected to live in a homogeneous community. But we didn%u2019t. A decision that involves an entire community--in this case, Fort Greene-must reflect the opinions and feelings of all its residents. For this reason, I support the proposedSculptured Gardens\\W Vanderbilt Ave 853-5M H... a new look for your qarden, cny+ed by ken.rj ner John AieiStfder'aid partner Joseph c-haiiz.Pictured Adam, one of many wire %u25a0figures cue can install m ydur garden,1(1 ynnj- ansaujay.on your fefface. we tram ivy and/or other creeping vines to cLwb on grow into the frame j leases of nearby trees f bushes caiieet Aside, in one season these forms become masses of greenery.783-8394installation of Cumberland Hospital%u2019s mental health facility at 3 Lafayette Avenue [see news story on Page 2].Though our area is saturated with institutions-one of them a continuing annoyance to its neighborsCumberland%u2019s mental health program must have additional space right now. After visiting the facility, 1 am convinced that need overrides the question of institutional expansion. We cannot expect the program to function in outrageously cramped quarters simply because there are other institutions near the proposed site. But approval doesn%u2019t have to mean carte blanche. We mustinsure the program will be a good neighbor. I believe we can do this by insisting on the H ospital%u2019s written commitment that (1) it will not become a residential facility; (2) since the proposed site is slated for demolition anyway, it will continue its search for a permanent site and will consult with all groups in the community-not just the planning board or the mental health board; (3) its permanent site will be in the center of the Fort Greene community--not in the center of the Hospital%u2019s catchment area (the area it is mandated to serve by the City). These are three of the most obvious stipulations. It may be that blocks neighboring the proposed facility will want to impose othersnot as roadblocks, but as controls. And that%u2019s as it should be. But the people who need help need it now. And if Fort Greene's middle class hopes to gain wide support for its own pet projects, it cannot continue to function solely as organized nay-sayer on proposals that appear to benefit only the poor.Helping Cum berland find a permanent home is the kind of positive input we can generate; it is one of many ways we can help to build the exciting multi-racial, multi-class community we all want.Brooklyn Country^Natural Foods& General StoreHomebaked goodies, gourmet treats, cheese of all nations, basketware, books, antiques, soaps, herbs, spices 196 Hall Street Hrs: 11:30-6:30,Mon-Fri.i t 's Spring -. -time-to scatter seeds -from RARE EARTH and reaps bountiful harvest of vegetables, herbs %u00a3 spices.DROP IN AND SEE OUR SELECTION OF EXOTIC ' PLANTS $ BEAUTIFUL HANGING BASKETS . Her eye in selecting and creating merchandise for her shop is unfailing.Ms. Johnson opened her shop in October, 1972, on the garden floor of her brownstone. When she opened, the shop was completely bare, except for two bolts of fabric from the Design Workshops of Bedford-Stuyvesant, from which she made wall hangings, placemats, aprons and pillows. %u201c At that time, the shop occupied only the front half of the garden floor, says Ms. Johnson. %u2018%u2018The back half was my kitchen. When the shop developed growing pains, we moved the kitchen upstairs and took over the whole garden floor. %u2019 %u2019As she met local craftsmen through her work in the area, Ms. Johnson was able to fill the shop with merchandise on consignment. The shop's stock has since grown to include beautiful things from Brooklyn-and from the restof the world as weii. The range of merchandise is really amazing; withal, the atmosphere is open, airy, and pleasant to browse through. There are spring plants on sale right now, from 99 cents; a sale on imported Indian shirts, skirts and suits offers discounts from 20 to (>0 percent; there are Indian perfume bottles carved in brass, priced at $3 and $4; African market baskets and calabashes; museum reproductions and pre-Columbian artifacts; some exquisite amber necklaces; original mud paintings from the Ivory Coast, now sale priced at only $20; and a small selection of art-deco items. There are also beautiful dried flowers, in various colors, shapes and sizes; scented soaps and candles; handcrafted earrings, bracelets and necklaces in silver, gold, brass and various types of beading. As well as a great deal more there simply isn't room to mention. What you should do, of course, is drop by the shop, and see the incredibly large selection for yourself. Studio 14A is open for business and browsing Wednesday through Saturday, 12 to 6; on Friday evenings, until 8.
