Page 10 PHOENIX April 25,1974Redgrave & RoyaiTake on the British MonarchyThe Hollow Crown' at BAM:Wry, Witty, IrreverentBY FRANCES FREEDGOODIn TV parlance, performers engaging principally in discussion, discourse or debate are %u201c talkingheads.%u201dLast week, Sir Michael Redgrave led a Royal Shakespeare Company composed of five %u201ctalking heads,%u201d in %u201c The Hollow Crown,%u201d an %u201c entertainment by and about the Kings and Queens of England; music, poetry, speeches, letters and other writing from the chronicles, from plays, and in the monarchs%u2019 own words. Also music concerning and by them.%u201d The entertainment is the latest round of works in the Brooklyn Academy of Music%u2019s British Theater Season. The Hollow Crown skims lightly across almost a millenium of British history in a swift succession of wry, witty, irreverent, and sometimes remarkably timely comments on the monarchy. The five-person British company was composed, more exactly, of only four \In addition to Michael Redgrave, the company included Sara Kestelman, Paul Hardwick and James Grout -- augmented and abetted by one %u201c singing head,%u201d a sweet-voiced minstrel in the person of Martin Best, who accompanies himself on the guitar or lute, and who is at times backed by the vocal efforts of the entire ensemble.Eschews pomp and pagentry, neither trumpeting calls to glory, nor beating drumrolls of Churchiilian rhetoric. The players lounged - indeed from time to time, they lolled - at their ease in highbacked chairs, informally garbed in open-necked shirts and comfortably casual cardigans. The words they spoke were coolly acerbic; their portraits of Queens and Kings underscored the human far more than the hallowed. The contemporary accounts and voices lend startling immediacy to history. Henry VI1, asking his Ambassador about the charms of the Queen of Naples wanted to know about her demeanor (modest); the shape of her face (fat); and her breasts (full). Jane Seymour, in labor for six days, has %u201c her side pierced.%u201d Dying, she urges the King to marry again, but he protests. He vows that %u201c no, never will he take another wife - only mistresses.%u201d In this rough, rude world, the incumbent Vicar of Bray complacently reviews the succession, comfortably aware that no matter which King occupies the throne of England, the Vicar of Bray will continue in office uninterrupted. The aunt of young E, M. Forster urges him to write to her, and tells him of mad King George III. Fifteen year-old Jane Austen pens a wickedly partisan account of various Henrys and Edwards and assorted other monarchs.
