January is BusyAt Senior CenterDAVID ORMONTWith the advent of 1974, there hasbeen no letup in activities at theColony-South Brooklyn SeniorCenter, 460 Atlantic Ave. On Jan.11 there was a New Year%u2019s Party atthe center and those who attendedwill never forget.Mrs. Jean Sutherland, who is incharge of the Sewing Room, washostess for the party and the guestlist was limited to personsgenuinely occupied with the affairsof the center. More than fivehundred men and women aremembers. Among the lucky guestswere: Helen Tunstall, MiriamSmart, Bill Rodgers, CoraRodgers, Kay Latona, EthelLennart, Stella Ferguson, MollyMoquin, Grace Amorosa, SarahO%u2019Donnell, Samuel Elias, ClayJohnson, Antoinette Giordano,Burkhardt Kraus, Eve Coletti,Eleanor Paradiso, IsabelleCaldwell, Betty Stella, PatrickIvohy, Joe Cataldo, David Ormont,Jason Thomas, and Jerry Daniels.The Art Room is the scene ofgreat activity every Wednesday.William Schulman, a recognizedBrooklyn artist, is the instructor.With patience and understanding,he encourages members of thecenter who have never paintedbefore to produce works of considerable merit. Unfortunately, nottoo many have taken advantage ofthis rare opportunity to becomeGrandma Moses%u2019. The men havebeen timid in joining the class.Four of the women who showconsiderable promise are FlorenceDiabo, Kay Latona, Helen Tunstall, and Antonia Guillot. Mr.Schulman helps each buddingartist personally and points outwhat is right and what is wrong ineach case. There will be anexhibition of the canvasses done bythese senior citizen artists in thenear future.Every month there is a GroupBirthday Party to honor thosewhose birthdays take place duringthat particular month. Louisand Anna Howatt have beenprofessional dancers for manyyears. They never fail to attendthese special monthly BirthdayParties. They performed theirgraceful dances, as usual, at theJanuary shindig. Jack Hock, aformer professional humorist andvocalist, put on a short act for afew minutes. David Ormont, thegroup%u2019s poet, laureate wrote a poemfor the occasion; this time it wasdedicated to all senior citizens.Mr. Ormont is a professionalsongwriter and a member ofASCAP. The lyrics he wrote for theoccasion were set to music byFrank Dale, one of Mr. Ormont%u2019scollaborators and may possibly bepublished and recorded.Two of our members are ill at theLong Island College Hospital.Eddie Smith had a stroke and ismaking a slow recovery. VineinzoDi Palma (whom we call Jimmy)had a heart attack and is doingwell. We sent them both get wellcards and signed by many seniorcitizens.Cuite Gets Light For 7th St. CornerLong-needed and awaited fortraffic lights will be installed at theintersection of 7th Avenue and 17thStreets announces CouncilmanThomas J.
