Loft Tenants Raise Funds For BattleBY LIZ KOCHBrooklyn loft tenants, engaged in a battleiiriFV* tVlA P ltir frt r n f o ln k n m A %u00ab mBrooklyn%u2019s manufacting districts of FultonFerry, Greenpoint and Williamsburg, received a financial boost recently from their compatriots in the art world to help them defraythe costs of their law suit.At the Puck Building in Manhattan on Oct.16, Artists for Artists, a joint venture of theBrooklyn Loft Tenants and the LowerManhattan Loft Tenants, sponsored an auction, selling works from such well-known artists as Robert Rauschenberg, LouiseNevelson and Ross Bleckner who donatedtheir works in support of the artists threatened with eviction. Roughly 140 paintings andsculptures were auctioned, raising $175,000.According to Monte Davis of the BrooklynLoft Tenants, works are still being sold andthe final figure will be much higher. The auction was preceded by an exhibit of the worksat the Charles Cowles Gallery. The 150 artists and gallery owners who participated in the auction represented a bondedopposition to a Board of Estimate vote lastJanuary that could lead to the eviction ofmore than 200 artists in Brooklyn. The lawpassed by the board ruled that tenants livingin manufacturing buildings in designatedareas of Brooklyn needed to prove that theirbuildings were 45 percent residential as ofJune, 1981 in order to be made legal. Otherswould be evicted. Earlier this year, BrooklynLoft Tenants filed a suit in the State SupremeCourt claiming the Board of Estimate hadviolated the City%u2019s Urban Land Use ReviewProcedure (ULURP) when they approved aplan that differed from the plan approved bythe City Planning Commission. A temporaryrestraining order was issued blocking evictions of the loft tenants. To date, no further action has been takenon the lawsuit. %u201cOur attitude is that we can bepatient because of the temporary restrainingorder, so the passage of time is not so important,%u201d says Davis. The money from thesale, which will be split between die two loftgroups, has been targeted for legal fees oncethe lawsuit is more actively underway, butDavis says the money will also be used fora more intensified public information campaign and to create a comprehensive guidefor the artists housing.Monte also points out that despite the City%u2019spromise to regulate the manufacturingbuildings, landlords in Brooklyn continue toadvertise the living lofts in their buildings.%u201cSince the Board of Estimate vote, 25buildings thut did not bovo resident!^ tenants have been advertised in the NewYork Times and Village Voice. The Cityseems as impassive and uncaring as beforeand these buildings continue to beadvertised,%u201d he says. %u201cNo one seems to carebut us.%u201d3rd St. Bridge To OpenAfter more than four years, the City of NewYork%u2019s Transporation Department says thatthe 82-year-old Third Street Bridge over theGowanus Canal will open to traffic this Saturday.Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the renovation, now estimated to cost about$4.9 million, is nearly complete after a seriesof complications that have delayed the reopening.Initially, the renovation work was expectedto cost about $3.6 million but after work hadto be redone on the rails which transport thebridge when it is opened and closed and newwooden piles had to be added to reinforce thebridge, the cost began to skyrocket. TheCity%u2019s Corporation Counsel is considering alawsuit against the consulting engineer as aresult of the change in costs. %u2014 R.T.Ambassador To SpeakU.N. Ambassador Dr. Isack S.G.
