Brooklyn,___incWine Firm Sells OutBY LIZ KOCHThe Monarch Wine Company of Brooklynhas agreed to sell its Manischewitz winebrand, a kosher wine that has been produced in Brooklyn since 1939, to the upstateCanandaigua Wine Company, one of the nation's largest sellers of wine.Although the sale has not been finalized,Meyer Robinson, secretary of MonarchWine, says the last details are being ironedout and an announcement is expected shortly. Robinson declined to name the sale priceof Monarch%u2019s most popular wine brand, butnegotiations have hovered around the $17million mark. In recent years, sales ofManischewitz Wine, popular during theJewish holidays, have been decreasing according to company officials, prompting thesale.Monarch%u2019s announcement that it intendedto sell the brand came earlier this year, andemployees of the company, some 100 whoare involved in production of theManischewitz brand, responded with theirown proposal to buy the brand. Lead bychief chemist Victor Zylbemagel, the groupput together a purchase package, assistedby Samuel Zimetvaum, president ofQuadrant Capital Inc., to buy the brand for$20 million to save their jobs from movingupstate. The company declined to considerthe offer put forth by the employees, manyof whom are religiously observant Jewsreluctant to leave the New York Jewishcommunity for upstate jobs.%u201cThe proposal by the employees came toolate for consideration,%u201d says Robinson.Monarch Wine is expected to shut itsBush Terminal Manischewitz plant beforethe end of the year and when the plantcloses only one commercial winery will remain in Brooklyn, the Royal Kedem WineCorporation on Kent Avenue inWilliamsburg.
