Already completed is protectionbuilt around the tower bases of the bridge toprevent boats traveling on the East Riverfrom striking the base. In 1982, the bridgepromenade between the Brooklyn and theManhattan Towers was replaced and theroadbed on the bridge was finished last year. That work included putting overlay on top ofthe studs. The third contract now under constructioninvolves two projects. One, the reconstruction of the walkway, is nearing completion.%u201cThe promenade and the ramp to the bridgeare more than 90 percent complete,%u201d Pangsays. The rebuilding of portions of theBrooklyn Bridge walkway have made thebridge wheelchair accessible as well as affording a smoother trip to bikers. In its original form, the walkway was onlyaccessible by stairs. The reconstruction hasexpanded the walkway from Tillary Street inBrooklyn over the river to Center Street inManhattan with both sides providing rampsand curb cuts. The total cost for the new construction plus the replanking of the actualwalkway on the bridge came to $10 million, according to Pang. This included costs fromnew and improved lighting, drainage for thenew portions of the walkway and walls thatblock off the pedestrians from the trafficheaded toward the Brooklyn Bridge onAdams Street.%u201cWe touched all parts of the walkway fromthe tower to the approaches and improved itfor everyone%u2019s use,%u201d Pang explains. Bikerson a sunny afternoon can now zip across thebridge without lugging their transportationup a flight of stairs and the handicapped nowhave access to the bridge. As an expansion of these improvements, the City%u2019s Department of Transportation hasannounced that it will conduct work at the intersection of Tillary and Adams Streets, where the pedestrian walkway ends. Thereconstruction there will include work on theroadway, sidewalks and curbs to improvesafety for pedestrians crossing at the intersection. A timetable for the work has yetto be announced, but the work will includeredesigning traffic flow as well as repavingportions of the road and reconstructingcurbs.WORK INCLUDES ENGINEERINGOther work now underway on the bridgeconcerns engineering changes directly affecting the stability of the bridge. This work, ongoing since 1983, involves shifting thecables that were splayed at steep angles tothe main cables to a more gentle slant, thusr o H n r > i n c r n r o c c n r o n n t h e a n n l i n m n no r - - w v ----Jiuia6c. - %u201c%u201cbsays workers are now engaged in repairingthe broken and weak wires on the maincables of the bridge. With work secured onthe Brooklyn anchorage, workmen are nowfocused on the Manhattan side of the bridgewhere 19 different strands hook down into thefoundation of the bridge serving as the loadbearing structure for the suspension bridge.%u201cIt is basically the end of the cable thatthey are working on now,%u201d Pang explains.Although each step of the construction project has resulted in massive changes for thebridge, according to Pang, it is the upcomingcontracts that will most radically affect thebridge, and in essence remove large portionsof the original structure. The next upcomingcontract, scheduled to begin in late October, will consist of the replacement of all the vertical and diagonal suspension cables on thebridge. The only untouched cables will be thefour 16-incn cables that slope down from thetowers.%u201cIn essence we are talking about replacingparts of the bridge that are over 100 years old,and except for the towers and the main cable, everything will be new,%u201d Pang explains. Thereplacements, he says, are a necessary safety feature for the bridge with its currentheavy burden that it carries each day.%u201cRemember, these are cables that are 100years old,\last forever.%u201dThe main cables, however, are bearing thepassage of time quite well. \right now are in fairly decent shape. Theywere looked at very closely,%u201d Pang explains. The towers, too, he says, have withstood theconstant flow of the East River.Once the cables have been replaced, a newchallenge will be confronted as engineersseek to determine that each cable is bearingits proper amount of weight. This, Pangpredicts, will be the largest of the contracts.%u201cThe adjustments to the suspension andmaking sure that each one carries the properweight will be very time consuming,%u201d hesays. Uncertain of exactly how long that portion of the project will be underway, he sayswith emphasis, %u201ca long time.%u201dLooking to the future, Pang sees fewobstacles blocking the progress of the workon the bridge, but says instead that if fundingimproves, work could be finished earlier thanplanned. %u201cMuch of it depends on what themoney situation is like,%u201d he says. %u201cWith moremoney available, work could be completedfaster, but right now with cuts in the Federalbudget, we are still predicting to be completed in 1997.%u201dUC #751343AO NELOCKSMITHS, INC.6 2 4 - 0 7 1 1W e%u2019re N u m b e r 1 forSecurity and Service24-Hour Emergency ServiceAlarms %u2022 Door Buzzers %u2022 GatesFREE ESTIMATES485 Court St. (corn.
