For more information,call 6364100.Jazzy Clinic OpensJazz buffs are invited to a performance/jazz clinic to be given by trumpeter/bandleader Woody Shaw for students inLong Island University%u2019s Big Band as partof the coursework for LIU%u2019s Jazz Plus baccalaureate program, on December 2, from4-6pm.Woody Shaw performed with Eric Dolphy,Kenny Clarke, Bud Powell, and DonaldByrd in the early 60s, and joined HoraceSilver%u2019s group in 1965. He played with McCoy Turner, Gil Evans, and Art Blakey inthe early 70s, before starting his own bandin 1976. Shaw has recorded numerousalbums and achieved critical acclaim withhis band which, with some personnelchanges, has endured for a decade.The trumpet is the %u201cprince of horns,%u201d according to Shaw, but a very difficult instrument to master both physically and mentally. He credits his long-time study of Tai Chiwith helping his concentration and breath,keeping him calm, and giving him an%u201carsenal of energy%u201d and a %u201crock-hard%u201dsolar plexus. %u201cMy concern now is promoting the legacy of the trumpet,%u201d saysShaw. %u201cI%u2019m trying to pass on my experienceto young musicians.
