The five-year contractof current Superintendent Jerrold Glassmanexpires in June, 1987, and despite the decision, he says he will reapply for the post.At a November 20 public hearing, theboard, which serves Park Slope, SouthBrooklyn, Sunset Park and Red Hook, wassplit between a coalition led by board president Phil Scala and a group of several othermembers including Philip Kaplan, who hadbeen president of the board for nearly 16years. Kaplan voiced opposition to advertising for the position and favored negotiating anew contract with Glassman, who wasoriginally appointed under his tenure. Scalaand others advocated opening the process toother applicants.On November 24, in an executive sessionclosed to the public, a majority of the boardmembers voted in favor of advertising.Notice of the opening will appear in most ofthe daily papers including El Diario andAmsterdam News and will be circulated bythe Board of Education. Despite the the decision to advertise, the hoar a is not obligated toconduct interviews unless it determinesqualified applicants have responded. Scala,who said he was pleased with the decision,said, %u201cDr. Glassman has a lot of strengths,but there are some other things we need tolook at.%u201dThe next meeting of the District SchoolBoard will take place December 18 at 8pm atPublic School 32, 317 Hoyt St. On the agendafor discussion will be designation of sites forafter-school centers during the 1987-88academic year and the possible establishment of an early childhood center for thedistrict. %u2014 M.J.N.Parents Go To SchoolContinued from Page 7workshops. %u201cIt%u2019s a chance to talk importantissues with people who need to be partners,%u201dMartin Schwartz said. %u201cIt also works wellbecause it%u2019s without the emotion of talkingabout their specific child,%u201d he added. %u201cIt alsohelps eliminate institutional fear and openschannels of communication.%u201dSixta Ponce, chair of School Board 13%u2019sCurriculum Committee, stressed after theevening that the program was only the startof a more extensive effort. %u201cNow we will findout what the needs are for parents at the individual schools and we will bring theworkshops there,%u201d she said. %u201cThis is just thebeginning.%u201dPark Slope Food Coop Looking For Members, For the first time since it began 13 yearsago, the Park Slope Food Coop is activelycampaigning to recruit new members. %u201cInthe past, interested people had to seek out theCoop, and there was frequently a long list ofthose waiting to join. This is no longer thecase,%u201d says Linda Wheeler of the Coop.In its store at 782 Union Street, the Coop offers a wide range of high quality food andnon-food products at prices that she says%u201care quite low.%u201d It is owned and operatedequally by its membership, which is open toall. What makes the Park Slope Food Coopunusual among food coops nationwide is thatnearly 90 percent of the work involved in running the business is done by its memberowners.%u201cIt%u2019s success and longevity may be attributed to its structure %u2014 each memberworks for three hours every four weeks at aregular Coop job,%u201d says Wheeler.The Coop has now expanded its shoppinghours from three to seven days per week andits 1700 membership needs to increase accordingly reports Wheeler. At least 300 more areneeded for the Coop to be fully staffed. Uponjoining, each adult in a household chooses aworksiot, pays a $5 fee (twice a year) and aone-time refundable deposit of $30.%u201cAlthough shopping is for members only,visitors are now welcome to see the Coop during shopping hours,%u201d says Wheeler. Times areMonday through Thursday from 5-9:45pm,Friday from 9am to 9:4:5pm, and Saturdayand Sunday from 9am to 4pm. Anyone whowould like to join may come to a two-hournew member orientation. Upcoming orientations will be held on Dec. 21, Jan. 6 and 7 starting at 7:30pm each day.
