(P h eonix/N euberger Photo)Continuedstarting 19 another group for teenagers.%u201cWe%u2019re human beings and we need celebration,%u201d she says. %u201cI can%u2019t conceive of acelebration without music.%u201dWhen Director John DeNiro arrived at St.Francis Xavier four and a half years ago,the choir at the time wasn%u2019t even havingrehearsals, but he liked what he sawanyway. %u201cI was looking for a church with asense of dignity in their service, where thepriests had a sense of the role a choir canplay.%u201d DeNiro looks at his 20 years inchurch music as more than a profession,saying, %u201cIt wasn%u2019t just a job, it was aministry.%u201dDuring his tenure at St. Francis, he hasbuilt up not one but three choirs %u2014 theEnglish choir, a Spanish choir to sing at theweekly mass in Spanish language and achildren%u2019s choir with students from thechurch%u2019s parochial school.GET A LOT FROM ITMary Monroe of Grace Church brings asimilar dedication to her work. %u201cYou haveto get a lot out of it,%u201d she says. %u201cIt%u2019s toomuch work otherwise.%u201d Monroe, who hasbeen conducting music for 25 years, haslearned to appreciate her volunteer singers.%u201cThese people will spend all of Christmaseve here,%u201d she exclaims. %u201cIt%u2019s a sacrifice,but they are serving their church.%u201d Monroeexpects her 19 singers to put in as much asshe does. %u201cI%u2019d rather do music that ischallenging for them. It%u2019s worth the risk ofnot having polish,%u201d die concludes.Truth to tell, despite hours of practice,having to produce new material every weekcan mean an occasional mistake. Tieother overriding motivation is a spiritualone. %u201cWe all have a strong feeling thatwe%u2019re providing an integral part of the worship,%u201d says Stephen DeFrancesco at GraceChurch. %u201cIt helps us, it helps the congregation, and it helps the liturgy.
