Gilman,Chairman of Abraham & StrausDear Mr. Gilman:During July, we approached Mr. Robert Tammero, President of Abraham & Straus, regarding the plight of the J.P. Stevens textile workers and asked that he exercise his managerial discretion to discontinue the sale and promotion of J.P. Stevens Products. According to Mr. Tammero, any future change in this policy would be %u201cstrictly a marketing decision%u201d and not take into consideration the moral imperatives of the Stevens issue. Because we find this response to be totally unacceptable, Mr. Gilman, we have asked to meet with you personally to reach a satisfactory understanding. You have flatly refused to meet with us. Your refusal, Mr. Gilman, puts you and Abraham & Straus squarely in support of the J.P. Stevens Company, the foremost violator of the human rights of working people. The record of the J.P. Stevens Company is a shocking one. Stevens has been involved in nearly 1,000 violations of the National Labor Relations Act since 1963. Stevens has willfully fired, harassed, spied on, and economically discriminated against workers who wanted to join a union (the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers). The National Labor Relations Board hasCelebratea hundred-year tradition.Monday, Sept. 10th.As part of our continuing centennial celebration, you are invited to attend a special Anniversary Dinner Party Take a nostalgic trip into the past to our landmark eating house. Yet J.P. Stevens finds it cheaper to pay the fines than improve conditions in the mills. Two federal district courts have found Stevens guilty of discriminating against black workers and the company is currently under investigation by the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission for company-wide violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This, Mr. Gilman, is part of the sorry record of the company that you and Abraham & Straus now publicly support.Because of your support for Stevens and because of your refusal to meet with us, we are now forced, Mr. Gilman, to take a more public stand. It is our belief that justice delayed is justice denied. In order to insure that justice for the Stevens workers is delayed no longer in Brooklyn, we will sponsor a vigil in front of your store on September 6 to witness against the Abraham & Straus/J.P. Stevens connection. We urge you, Mr. Gilman, to be a responsible corporate citizen. We urge you to join all of us, right here in Brooklyn, in support of justice and human decency. The Rev.
