The Many Moods of Ed KochContinuedploy people from all five boroughs.u i n n n A f / i w n lanuTT unvw ni; a. n%u201c 1 love all the boroughs,%u201d the Mayor asserted. %u201d 1 was born in the Bronx%u2014the South Bronx, when it was in a somewhat different condition than today-in 1924. I lived in Brooklyn, on Ocean Parkway, from 1941 to 1956. Fifteen years%u2014that%u2019s a long time, right? So I know Brooklyn.%u201c And I have been so many times to Queens and to Staten Island, that I truly know all the boroughs.%u201dEd Koch said he stays in close contact with the boroughs by paying frequent visits to different sections of the city, such as a surprise call he made recently to the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn.%u201c I go out into neighborhoods three times a week.%u201d he explained. \in the evening from 5:30 to 7. when I leave City Hall. And on Saturday and Sunday.%u201dHe emphasized that he makes the visits %u2018%u2018unannounced. Without press and without notoriety, because that's how 1 learn. That's when people tell the truth.%u201dNO POLITICOSHe does not contact local politicians in advance of his visits, he said. \angry that I wasn%u2019t asking them along. But there'll be other timestown halls and constituent hourswhen I%u2019m delighted to have them join me.%u201dTTnrino hie weelcdav visit he said O rf '%u201c I ask civic organization leaders to join me and point out the needs of the community%u2014that happened in the Fort Greene Clinton Hill operation. And on Saturday and Sunday, I get a list of all the community events in the city%u2014 there is so much going on%u2014and I find out where the people are going%u201c I can%u2019tchange can I? I'm 54.1 have to be what I am-For good or bad.%u201dto be. Community events, parades, feast days, all sorts of things. I will not know before I get in the car where I'm going to go, but generally I go out of Manhattan and spend my time in the other four boroughs.%u201dThe Mayor sat forward as he described his weekend adventures. His enthusiasm was evident. One sensed that he wouldn't even need a list%u2014that his own built-in divinrod would always kjm where the parades and feasts were.NOT ARROGANTEd Koch is absolutely convinced that the vast majority of New Yorkers support him and approve of his policies. He brushes off accusations that he is arrogant, unfeeling, and out of touch with the people. %u201c I%u2019m not arrogant,%u201d he said. %u201c But I do have a sense of self-worth. I do believe that I have some abilities, and I have confidence in myself.%u201c And I like my job. There are people who don%u2019t like their job. When they go to work, every day is a chore. And there are people who are not confident about their ability to do a job, and they%u2019ll be perceived as insecure. But I don%u2019t believe that a sense of well-being and security and an abilitv to do your job arc .synonymous with arrogance.%u201c Some people say I speak out too much. But you have to do what you feel comfortable with. Certain things have to be said. And if you tick people off on occasion, that%u2019s part of life.%u201d%u201cOn the other hand,\continued, %u201c lots of things 1 say make people think %u2018gee%u2014if I were doing his job, that%u2019s exactly what I would be saying. Exactly what I would be doing. Isn%u2019t it nice to have someone saying the things thathave to be said, even though you may lose some friends along theway?%u201d %u2019DOING WHAT HE WANTSIf that seems cold comTort to a mail with a giCWuig 1 iSt of CuCmiCS, it is consolation enough for Koch. He is unchastened-still the happy warrior.%u201cI%u2019m doing what I want to do. I%u2019m back in New York for one thing,%u201d he said, alluding to his years as a congressman in Washington. %u201c I get up at six o%u2019clock in the morning.. .1 get'that from my father,%u201d he said paranthetically. %u201c He%u2019s 85 now. He used to get up at 5:30, so you can see he was much more energetic than I am.%u201d%u201c I leave the house at 6:30%u201d he continued, %u201c and go to the gym so I can work out. 1 run a half-mile on the jogging machine and then do calcsthenics for 40 minutes. I open up City Hall at a quarter of eight in the morning. My day goes on until sometime after midnight.%u201dHOME TO THE VILLAGE During the week, the Mayor lives at Grade Mansion. But on Saturdays and Sundays, he comes home to the Village, the %u2018%u2018old neighborhood%u201d where he started out.He likes to do his own shopping. %u201c I buy at Zito%u2019s, at Murray's, at Jack%u2019s Meat Market%u2014that%u2019s the Florence market. And I go to Balducci%u2019s and Jefferson markets.%u201d He also eats out a lot in Village restaurants. %u201c I don%u2019t like to give the names, because then they%u2019ll be lined up to get in. But I do like theBuffalo Roadhouse%u2014I go there Saturdays for lunch. Their spinach salad is, I think, the best in the city. And I go to One Fifth Avenue,%u201d he added with political adroitness. %u201cTheir Cc
