The oldest buildings are near the Fulton Street end below the intersection of Pineapple Street predating $840. Brick brownstone or frame residences of the m id-nineteenth century on the W est side of C olum bia Heights had back yards that extended out onto the tops of w arehouses fronting Furman Street below. A little further were the warves on the East River serving the sailing ships.The David Leavitt m ansion constructed in 1844, was better known for its second ow ner Henry C. Bowen (pictured above). Its Greek Corinthian po rtico looked out over C olum bia Heights. The building was razed in 1904.
