(co-sponsored byHoward Golden, NYC Dept, of Parks andRecreation and the NYC Dept, of CulturalAffairs). It%u2019s a free festival with programming of exceptional magnitude. Eitherdance, music or theatre will be offeredpractically every night of the week throughAugust 31st.The ambitious dance series, which is really a m ini-festival by itself, has grown intoan eclectic showcase for all kinds of danceincluding ballet, African, jazz, theatre andmodem dance. While the first week of the dance festivalfeatures more established artists and theircompanies, the second week is devoted to%u201cemerging artists%u201d of Brooklyn and elsewhere. Hash wants to keep developing thism ini-festival of dance with his main goalthe presentation of more and more new andinnovative talent from Brooklyn. In light of this, %u201cCelebrate Brooklyn%u201d hasinvited the Brooklyn Dance Consortium forits second appearance at the Festival. The Consortium%u2019s contribution will bemuch expanded this season. According toHash, this is the first original effort atbringing together independent Brooklynchoreographers, dancers and dance companies in the borough and presenting themin performance. Elise Bernhardt, the founding member and coordinator of the Consortium, saw a pressing need for such a groupof dance artists when she noticed that mostof the dance troupes appearing in Brooklynwere usually from Manhattan. Brooklynartists were desperately in need of a voice.Bernhardt%u2019s innovations and perseverancebrought the Consortium to the attention of%u201cCelebrate Brooklyn%u201d and Burl Hash.Three years ago, Bernhardt asked Hashto let the Consortium perform in the Prospect Park bandshell on Thursday nightsduring the %u201cCelebrate Brooklyn%u201d summerfestival. They produced their appearancesindependently without any sponsorship fromthe Festival. Hash agreed and was so interested in what he saw that he and %u201cCelebrate Brooklyn%u201d co-produced the Consortium%u2019s appearance at the Festival the following year. The Consortium presented amarathon concert in which each artist presented a ten-minute work. Hash becamefurther involved when he joined the programming panel of the Consortium. By thattime, up to 40 tapes poured in from aroundthe borough, attesting to the number of artists now living in Brooklyn. Finally, Hash hired Bernhardt to coordinate the two-week dance series for thisyear%u2019s %u201cCelebrate Brooklyn,%u201d in which theConsortium will have two presentations: another marathon concern and a showcasewhere four artists will receive approximately 30 minutes each on stage.Much of this forward-thinking and extensive programming was realized when Hashasked BAM to become involved in the danceportion of %u201cCelebrate Brooklyn.%u201dSince the time of BAM%u2019s subsequent support and participation, New York Telephonebecame the major sponsor of the danceseries. Hash is encouraged that the serieswill continue to develop under that sponsorship.BAM%u2019s vice-president Judith Daykin hasjoined Hash and Bernhardt in designing theprogramming for the dance series.Maverick Offers aBY AMINISHA WEUSI%u201cHanna Und Rainer,%u201d a one-act dramabased on the life of German film makerRainer Fassbinder, made its debut lastThursday night and will run through June29th at the Maverick Theatre located at 152Bergen Street in Boerum Hill. The play, written by Andrew Salgado anddirected by Roger Lawson, is an intense45-minute exploration of the love-hate relationship between director Fassbinder andhis long-time friend, actress HannaSchygulla.Betsy Thomson playing Hanna and VincentHank playing Rainer succeed in holding theaudience in rapt attention as flashbacksreveal aspects of the turbulent and passionate relationship. The stage is bare except for two chairsand four original posters of FassbinderHash%u2019s current ultimate goal for dance in%u201cCelebrate Brooklyn%u201d is to have two continuous weeks of appearances by Brooklyn artists. This year%u2019s series begins Thursday, June19th, with the American Ballroom Theatreand the Ballet Hispanieo. Nevertheless, in apowerful, dramatic moment Hanna is inspired by him to become a refined andsophisticated actress. The play is an excerpt from a longerscreenplay Salgado submitted to the BerlinFilm Festival. The company, as its name suggests, operates differently from traditionaltheaters.
