Community Council Honors And CelebratesBY AMINISHA WEUSIPratt Area Community Council celebrated22 years of community works with a dinnerdance Friday night at the Masonic Temple atI Jtfayette and Clermont Avenues.The annual affair revolves around anawards program started 11 years ago toacknowledge the unsung heroes who servethe community. According to Howard Weiss,Chairman of PACC, no famous people getawards. The speakers of the evening are theawardees themselves.Among the approximately 200 people at theevent were Assemblyman Roger Green,District Leaders Ed Hightower and RubyNottage, Senator Velmanette Montgomeryand Councilwoman Mary Pinkett. Also present was Parker Jones, one of PACC%u2019s earlyawardees, who organized Willoughby Walktenants and prevented Pratt from buying thetwo buildings which have since been turnedinto coops.This year%u2019s awardees were ConsueloHudgins, Henry Samuel, Sarah AnestaSamuel and Vincent Young.Hudgins, recording secretary for PACC,has lived on Clifton Place since 1972 and hasworked with her block association on variouscommittees. She also joined neighborhood efforts to save the Mohawk Hotel.Henry Samuel, a native of Panama, wasprincipal of P.S. 289 for 11 years. He is amember of both the Society For Clinton Hilland PACC as well as a past president of theLafayette/St. James Block Association.Samuel serves on the board of EmmanuelChristian Center and is a founder of the Clinton Hill Lions Branch.Sarah Anesta Samuel, wife of HenrySamuel, was assistant director and directorof the Emmanuel Day Care kindergartenfrom 1959 to 1984, served on Emmanuel%u2019sBoard of Trustees and several other committees. She is the founder of Dedication, Inc.which has provided more than 150 educationscholarships to needy Panamanian students.Vincent Young, an active member of PACCfor 18 years, is a well known community activist. He was one of the founding members ofthe Brooklyn chapter of the Congress forRacial Equality (C.O.R.E.) and served aschairman of the Bedford-Stuyvesant DraftCounseling Service which kept more than3,000 young men from serving in Vietnam.MASS Raises Funds At Condominium PartyThe Merchants Association of Smith Street(MASS) held a fundraiser June 19, and talked Jerry and Selma Abramowitz into giving asneak preview of their new condominiumproject, Wyckoff House, at the comer ofSmith and Wyckoff.Although the 42-unit building has severalmonths of work to go before the apartmentsare ready to be lived in, guests got guidedtours by the hosts and told what they shouldexpect to see when it is completed.The former furniture store, which stood vacant for seven years, is being redesigned toinclude five floors of one- and two-bedroomcondominiums. Hie units include fireplaces,utility rooms, hardwood floors and open kitchen plans. Apartment prices are not available until the condominium plan is approved.But the view from the roof gardens waswhat pleased most of the guests who weresurprised to find a view that stretched fromdowntown Brooklyn all the way to the Narrows Bridge. The Manhattan skyline wasalso visible, though, as one guest put it, that%u2019spasse. Librarians from other parts of the U.S. willtour some Brooklyn branch libraries, including the newly-modernized New Utrecht andSheepshead Bay branches, and BPL expertswill be part of other programs.The library%u2019s Service to the Aging officerwill host a conference entitled %u201cServing Today%u2019s Older Adults/Planning for Tomorrow,%u201d at the Kings Highway branch on June27. At the ABA conference, Patrick Fiore, coordinator of collection department, will participate in a program entitled %u201cIntegratingLiteracy Services into a Metropolitan Library System,%u201d with the library%u2019s Literacy Program staff members. Also at the conference,Lydia Last and Linda Silverman will talkabout women%u2019s education and job information programs, and Marguerite Dodson, thelibrary%u2019s coordinator of programming, willdiscuss The Child%u2019s Place, the Library%u2019s areafor pre-schoolers and the people who live andwork with them.Sylvia Mechanic, who recently retired ashead of the Brooklyn Public Library%u2019s Busiess Library, will be awarded the ALA%u2019s Isadora Gilbert Mudge Citation for distinguishedcontributions to reference librarianship.Dorothy Nyren, chief of the Central Library at Grand Army Plaza, will chair theconference%u2019s Notable Books Council, whichselects the best books for 1986. Barbara Genco, assistant coordinator of new books for thelibrary, will co-present the Reference andAdult Services Division%u2019s John Sessions Memorial Award, which recognizes significantefforts to work with the labor community;she is also participating on the ALA/AFL-CIO Joint Committee on Service toLabor Groups, and on the Association for Library Service to Children Legislative JointCommittee, which will hold a session at theconference on lobbying for children%u2019s programs.Ann Kalkhoof, branch librarian at the Rugby Branch Library, is co-chair of the ALAChildren%u2019s Book Council Committee, which ispresenting a panel discussion of editors ondecision-making in juvenile publishing. Connie Freeman, librarian, is a member of dieNew York Black Librarian%u2019s Caucus, whichwill host a reception following the ALA BlackCaucus meeting. Members of the Library%u2019sFriends and Associates groups will be manning the Friends of Libraries U.S.A. booth onSaturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29.In connection with the series of events, thelibrary will host a reunion of Brooklyn PublicLibrary current and former staff membersat the Central Library, Grand Army Plaza,on July 1, from 5-7pm.
