Projects,programs, awards and trips are just a few ofthe things that have been given importance inthe learning experience at these schools.New ties have been created both with otherschools and other countries. GeorgeWestinghouse High School students havestarted %u201cCAMP,%u201d a program linking enteringfreshmen with %u201cbig brothers and sisters,%u201dWestinghouse graduates currently attendingN.Y.C. Technical College. There are alsoover 140 students participating in collegecourses at N.Y.C.T.C., both non-credit andcredit, as part of Project CARE (Creating aRelevant Experience).Denita Kellman of Sarah J. Hale H.S. hasbeen chosen as a winner of an AmericanField Service Scholarship to Europe thissummer. She will spend ten weeks as %u201cambassadress,%u201d living with host families andlearning about different cultures andlanguages of Europe.Pacific H.S. has adopted a child from Balithrough Foster Parents, Inc. StudentsElizabeth Frias and Vanessa Colon are incharge of raising money for her support.Volunteering for good causes has also beena priority at local schools. Westinghousestudents raised over $1,000 in the recentWalkAmerica drive in Central Park.Students Margaret Marshall and Mariel Vasquez have earned individual recognition fortheir volunteer tutoring work at the AngelGuardian Home over the past few years.Westinghouse%u2019s Senior Citizens Escort Service has been nominated for a Mayor%u2019s YouthService Recognition Award.There has also been a focus on the arts recently. Pacific H.S. students Alphonso Davisand William Obregon had their photographson exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum as part ofthe annual BACA Art Exhibit.This year%u2019s Hale Variety Show at Sarah J.Hale H.S. had a rap theme, and included afashion revue, dancing and vocals, and SarahJ. mixers and human beat boxes.Also featuring the arts was WEB (Widening Educational Boundaries) at Westinghouse. Students were exposed to New Yorkculture by visiting Broadway plays, theBotanic Gardens, the Museum of NaturalHistory, the Planetarium and the SouthStreet Seaport.Naturally, all of this community involvement, academic progress and hard workleads to student recognition, WestinghouseJunior Lorington Lodge was a WBLS EssayContest winner. Pacific H.S. received a grantfrom the National Self-Government Committee for a city-wide conference on studentgovernment and activities in alternative highschools thanks to the proposals for the conference written by Johnny Lloyd, ArquelioVega, and Jackie Marquez.Sarah J. Hale students received certificates for their participation in a business program in which student volunteers were trained to help students and staff in their preparation of income tax forms. These studentswere: Kirk Bascus, Elizabeth Beauchamp,Katrina Foye, Dionne Gonzalez, Sally Justiniano, Rosalie Maldonado, Marissa Torres,Zoe Carrero, Jessie Exobi, Angela Farmer,Sara Jolla, Yvonne Marin, Diane Padilla, Andre Williams, and Deborah Williams. Halewas also selected as one of the two N.Y.C.high schools chosen for the %u201cTeam Up toClean Up%u201d Award by the %u201cI Care About NewYork%u201d organization. The honored studentswere Ronda Ellis and Monique Rogers.Finally, of course, schools need some sortof recreation. Pacific H.S. held two separatetrips to Gateway National Park and HersheyState Park to provide its students with abreak after a hard year. Westinghousecreated a girls%u2019 softball team, the %u201cWild Kittens,%u201d that played a very successful season.Combining recognition with recreation isSarah J. Hale sophomore Madelyn Medinawho has been selected to attend the HughO%u2019Brien Youth Foundation New York Leadership Seminar in Greenvale.
