CiuTently in Phase II of a $6 million renovation, the company is planning to replace the current gates with rod-iron reproductions of the originals, to restore a comer, street-level space for retail use and to renovate the remaining store fronts to duplex apartments.A decision is expected shortly on this part erf renovation work which has been opposed by many of the building%u2019s current tenants who fear that Penson will file for a substantial rent increase after the work has been completed. Residents are now planning to hold a meeting with Penson and other interested community members, July 12, at 10:30 in the apartment building%u2019s yard, for an update on Penson%u2019s plans.%u2014R.T.City Silent On SupportThe Brooklyn Ecumenical Cooperatives (BEC) is still waiting for word on whether the City of New York is going to support its ambitious plan to create 1,700 units of housing in what is currently City-owned vacant property. The proposal was presented to Mayor Ed Koch and his new Housing Commissioner, Paul Crotty in May. Koch told 2,000 delegates from BEC%u2019s 38 member churches at a May 18 convention that Crotty would look into the plan and evaluate its economic feasibilityand since that time BEC President Fred Davie has met with Crotty three times to discuss the plan.Although an answer has not yet been given, Davie says the indications thus far are positive. %u201cThe Commissioner and his top staff are serious about getting on with the job of providing affordable housing for low and moderate income families. We don%u2019t agree on every deiaii, bui we are geiung down to specifics and there is a mutual commitment more forward expeditiously,%u201d Davie says. The apartments rehabbed under this project would be availabe for families earning between $12,000 and $30,000 and would be located in Fort Greene, Prospect Heights, Bedford Stuyvesant, Williamsburg and Crown Heights. %u2014 L.K.Students Pick WinnersA 27 year tradition at the Woodward Park School finds students awarding honors in addition to receiving them at the end of the school year.
