The food, as well asthe view are both selling points of the new restaurant. The Fulton Landing neighborhood was, until recently, anoverlooked one, but one with unbelievable potential. Wewanted to get in at the beginning when it was a discovery. We're helping to create Fulton Landing, in a sense.BY TRACY GARRITYI%u2019ve been to One Main %u2014 the new, talk-ofthe-town restaurant in Fulton Ferry %u2014three times. On my first visit the 10,000square foot restaurant was a vast canyonwith un-connected electrical wires hangingdown, with a decor of brick walls devoid ofpaint, and gaping holes where windows exposing a breathtaking view of Manhattanwould soon be installed. The second time was during a series ofpre-opening %u201crehearsals%u201d when theBrooklyn Board of Realtors patteddeveloper David Walentas on the back aswell as chef Scott Weaver for preparing aspicy lemon sole and delivering it hot andquickly to the 100 or so gathered. The most recent trip to the restaurant, located on the first floor of the clocktoweror Walentas Building at One Main St. wason the occasion of its grand opening July 15,where local luminaries such as BoroughPresident Howard Golden and City Councilmember Abe Gerges shared honors withbaked goat cheese in tomato sauce and coldshrimp with sherried mayonnaise. Thesethree visits serve to show the genesis of arestaurant aiming to be at the top of itsclass in cuisine and ambiance.Although unofficially open for severalweeks, Fred Tippett, president of the BorelNew York Company, which operates OneMain, and Borough President HowardGolden snipped the ribbon stretched acrossthe bar and declared One Main open forbusiness, July 15.%u201cThis is another glorious day forBrooklyn,%u201d said Golden. %u201cAnd a gloriousday for David Walentas who had a dream. Ipredict that One Main will do great. Itcomes right on time.%u201dTippett also thanked Walentas for givinghim the opportunity to open the restaurantin Fulton Ferry. %u201cIt is because of his visionthat we are in Brooklyn,%u201d he said.Walentas%u2019 comprehensive vision is stillsomewhat stymied as he waits for a greenlight to go ahead with the entire $150 milliondevelopment project, however. Both theState Department of Labor and themanagement of One Main, are banking onthe potential that Walentas will be againdesignated as the developer of the pier property in addition to the State ownedbuildings, and the Gair complex alreadyowned by Walentas, in the area between theBrooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.%u201cThe Fulton Landing neighborhood was, until recently, an overlooked one, but onewith unbelievable potential,%u201d said Tippett.%u201cWe wanted to get in at the beginning, when it was a discovery.%u201d%u201cWe%u2019re helping create Fulton Landing, ina sense,%u201d continued. %u201cWe%u2019ve opened arestaurant here because there will be nearly 20 buildings full of tenants needing aquality place to eat. And our being herenow provides another incentive for tenantsto choose this fabulous area.%u201dAnd just as developer Walentas hopes tooffer something for everyone, with adevelopment that eclectically combinescommercial space with a marina, retailshopping and an antique carousel, OneMain seeks to titillate a wide range ofpalettes with a menu boasting everythingfrom sashimi to cajun cuisine. And from thecomments of the crowd gathered at thegrand opening the diversity doesn%u2019t detractfrom the final product. Die food, all themany varieties, were a big hit. The view %u2014an eyeful of the Manhattan skyline flankedby the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges %u2014also got high marks at the opening.A sampling of the menu includes mesquite grilled veal chop with green peppercorn sauce, upstate rabbit braised withgarlic, fresh herbs and vegetables andmarinated quail, mesquite grilled withlemon thyme butter. Die seafood selectionsinclude Blackened Louisiana Gulf Redfish,Salmon Teriyaki with pickled ginger anddaikon and Panko Prawns. Prices for dinner entrees range from $14.95 for mesquitechicken, to $29.50 for a Brae Beef New Yorkclub steak (Brae Beef is from cattle raisedin Vermont to be lower in cholesterol thancommercial beef, according to the menu).Appetizers include Maguro Sashimi withsoya, wasabi and pickled ginger, cajun popcorn shrimp and carpaccio of sirloin withlemon-shallot vinaigrette. Prices rangefrom $4.95 to $7.25.Small ana large plates of Tapas areavailable at the bar and include PatatasBrava (fried potatoes with spicy sauce);Queso De Cabra A1 Homo (baked goatcheese with tomato sauce and garliccroutons) and truffled chicken liver moussepate. Small plates are about $5; largerplates, $7.One Main also serves a lunch menu offering an ample selection of sandwiches, gourmet burgers and pastas, as well as aseafood menu similar to the dinner menu.Lunchtime specials include a mesquitegrilled chicken, and chilled gaspacho withshrimp. Sandwiches and burgers run $7-$8;with seafood a few dollars more.In addition to the food and the view, restaurant patrons will also view a newflag, compliments of U.S. CongressmemberStephen Solarz, at One Main. Solarz aideStephanie Twin made the presentation toBorel President Dppett at the grand opening ceremony. %u201cIt is the Congressman%u2019shope that this flag will be a symbol of theresurgence of waterfront activity inBrooklyn,%u201d she said.ONE MAIN: Open daily for lunch,llam-3pm.
