The outdoor event will also focus attention on the upcoming June 14th Anti-Apartheid demonstration, of which Green is a key organizer.Green says, %u201ctaking the report to the streets is not a new approach, in fact it was utilized very effectively by Adam Clayton Pbwell Jr.. In addition, Albee Square Mall falls within my district and provides an excellent opportunity to take the message to the people. We will have special events for children which will be provided by the New Muse Community Museum.%u201dAlso to be there willl be State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Community Activist Katie Davis, Brooklynites Against Apartheid, Brooklyn Womens Martial Arts, Bev Grant and the Human Condition, and Maia Bandele of the Edmund Pettus Bridge Youth Movement. They Endorse GreenMark Green, candidate for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, received endorsements from several Brooklyn public officials on May 30 at Brooklyn Borough Hall. Among those who endorsed Green were State Senator Martin Connor, Assemhlymembers James Brennan and Eileen C. Dugan, and City Councilmember Stephen DiBrienza.Green, age 41, is a resident of Manhattan and a native of Long Island. He announced in April his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to face incumbent Republican Senator Alfonse D%u2019Amato. Green is a public interest attorney, author, television commentator and former associate of consumer advocate Ralph Nader.Safe Homes TestimonyMembers of the Park Slope Safe Homes Project testified May 16 at a public hearing on the Special Housing Needs of Women, an event jointly sponsored by the New York State Assembly Standing Committee on Housing, the Assembly Task Force on Women%u2019s Issues and the Legislative Women%u2019s Caucus.Governor Cuomo has stated that 40 percent of the homeless in public shelters are battered women. According to Diane Berg, of the Park Slope Safe Homes Project,%u201d a battered woman in New York City today is faced with an impossible choice. If she and her children flee their home in order to escape the violence, they have no place to go. They end up living in the street or in a welfare hotel under squalid conditions. Or she can stay at home with her abuser and possibly end up dead.%u201dThe Park Slope Safe Homes Project participated in the hearing, she said, in order to call attention to this hidden group of the homeless. %u201cHomeless women, including some who are battered, will tell about their experiences in the city%u2019s welfare hotels and in searching for housing,%u201d she said. Testimony was presented on behalf of women who presently are trapped in violent homes for lack of a place to go.Mega Wants RICO LawState Senator Christopher Mega, Bay Ridge/Park Slope, chairman of the State Senate%u2019s Committee on Crime and Correction, says he is %u201cpushing for quick and favorable action%u201d in the State Senate onenactment of a RICO law for New York State.Mega says that the legislation he is sponsoring was %u201cmodeled very much after%u201d the Federal government%u2019s Racketeer Influenced----------- & r\\ : i : m v / v \\ \\ i _ m .c u m M n i u p i v / i g o i u M u u i u \\ i u w ; uaw . n i claw would create a new crime known as %u201centerprise corruption,%u201d which would be committed by anyone who %u201cconducts the affairs of a legitimate or illicit enterprise through a pattern of criminal activity or collection of any unlawful debt; acquires or maintains an interest in such an enterprise through a pattern of criminal activity or collection of an unwarranted debt; or uses proceeds derived for a pattern of criminal activity or collection of an unlawful debt to acquire an interest in such an enterprise.%u201dMega says he is optimistic that the Republican-controlled State Senate will pass the law, but predicts that the law could face opposition in the more liberal Democraticcontrolled State Assembly. Mega says that he is hopeful that %u201cthe merits of a State RICO law will finally prove appealing to everyone, regardless of political party or philosophical persuasion.%u201dReduce Leader's PowerBrooklyn District Attorney Elizabeth Holtzman says that the position of county political party leader is %u201chistorically a focal point for corruption%u201d and on May 18, she outlined a four point plan to reduce the power of the position.%u201cOver the past ten years... we%u2019ve had case after case of county leader after county leader being convicted and sent to jail, or indicted or named in an indictment, or charged by the Attorney General of the state with some violation of the law,%u201d Holtzman said. Although noting that many county leaders have performed honorably, she says that %u201cIt%u2019s not an accident, it seems to me, that we%u2019ve had so many instances of abuse and corruption and criminality.%u201dTo reduce the power of the county leader position, Holtzman calls for: reducing the term of office to a single term of two to four years; prohibiting county leaders from having an interest in any financial transactions the city engages in; prohibiting county leaders from representing clients dealing with the City; and barring them from lobbying City officials on behalf of any clients.Reporter%u2019s NotebookContinued from Page 35said he thought the conditions for endorsement were %u201cunacceptable.%u201d You do not own me and I will accept no endorsement with any conditions attached,%u201d he said. But Cacchioni had the last word, %u201cAll you have to do is guarantee us an open political process.%u201dMany members seemed to fear that the resolution could divide and eventually destroy the reform club. A susbtitute resolution was then introduced which softened the language and did not require candidates to agree to support it in order to get the club%u2019s endorsement. In the debate about the substitute resolution, Gene Krinsky, the current WBID president said, %u201cEverything that we%u2019ve worked for for the past 30 years will be lost and we will see the destruction of this club if the original resolution is passed. I urge you to support the substitute resolution.%u201dThe substitute passed by a vote of 24-11.Club members stopped shouting at each other and the candidates attending the meeting breathed sighs of relief. Despite the shouting, the idealism and the anger, a compromise resolution passed and all the candidates seeking endorsements got what they came for, regardless of whether they had attended the dinner honoring D%u2019Amato. A strange battle had been won.MedicalKATHLEEN R. WATSON, M .D .
