The three sites, excluding theBrooklyn Battery Tunnel location, will eachhave an Emergency Medical Service ambulance (EMS) and a stationed fire vehicle.%u201cIt will cost the city a bundle in overtime,%u201dLoPreto remarks. %u201cThey%u2019ll have to bring people in from other commands,%u201d he says. The precinct is not only involved in its ownaffairs, but has coordinated with other Cityagencies and even the Coast Guard and NavyIntelligence to make certain that unexpectedsurprises do not occur. LoPreto explains thatextra security has been requested for the RedHook housing project, the Smith and NinthStreet subway station, high vantage points toview the fireworks, and that empty lots inRed Hook will be fenced in.In addition, with Navy ships docking at theBrooklyn Port Authority piers, including theCruiser, U.S.S. Yorktown, which earlier thisyear bombed Libyan patrol boats, and theU.S.S. Iowa and the huge ocean-going sailingships, safety precautions against a possibleterrorist attack are being taken. Police dogshave been placed in the abandoned buildingson all the piers and other precautions will beundertaken by Navy Intelligence, LoPretosays. In the event of any accident on Governor%u2019sIsland, the Coast Guard has coordinated withLong Island College Hospital to transport patients over to Pier 7 where they will be pickedup by a hospital vehicle.Another element that is being taken intoaccount by police will be the zeal for thehighest vantage point, an enthusiasm that isresulting in many rooftop parties.%u201cWe can control down on the street, butwhat happens on the roofs is another story,%u201dLoPreto says. %u201cWe have notified the BuildingDepartment and the Fire Department andhave identified a lot of the rooftop parties,%u201dhe says. %u201cThey can maybe come in and makean inspection and try to get the word out thatroofs were not made for big parties with 5,000people. They%u2019re not as strong as the otherfloors in the building,%u201d LoPreto points out.The other precinct with a good, watersideview of the harbor, is the 84th Precinct thatpicks up where the 76th leaves off. CaptainEmanuel Neuwirth from Brooklyn North ispredicting %u201cthe Brooklyn Promenade canhold 100,000 people and we are expecting atleast that many.%u201dHe sums up the situation quite succinctlysaying: %u201cThere will be endless throngs ofhumanity.%u201d For an estimate, he iscalculating that 2-3 million people will arrivefrom the fourth through sixth of July, andbetween 508-1000 extra officers will be dispatched to handle the crowd and direct traffic as streets are closed for the celebration.\cent of the people arriving decide to use theircars,%u201d Neuwirth says. Furman Street alongthe piers will be closed on the Fourth andFifth of July. Parts of Montague Street andJoralemon as they feed into the Promenadewill be closed for part of the day on July 3 asships from Operation Sail 1986 pass down theEast River to the Verrazano Bridge. Theships will pass back again the following day.Again emergency vehicles will be alreadypositioned and will be placed at Furman andJoralemon Streets, Water and Old FultonStreets, Water and Dock Streets, Middaghand Henry Streets, Clark Street and Columbia Heights, Remsen and the Promenade andPierrepont and Henry Streets. In additiontwo foot patrol teams will be on the Promenade.%u201cThere will be traffic controllers out on virtually every intersection starting from thepiers and going 10 blocks in every direction,%u201dNeuwirth says. The main crime problem he anticipateswill be the usual holiday pickpocketing activity and plainsclothes officers will be out%u201cin sufficient numbers,%u201d to combat that problem. For people who hoped to travel to the piersat Bush Terminal and view the events in the72nd Precinct, the piers will be off limits forthe occasion and Sunset Park will be the oneW e%u2019re expecting gridlock if evenone percent of the people arrivingdecide to use their cars. AtlanticAvenue and Furman Street will beclosed. The main crime problem isexpected to be pickpocketing.viewing area in that district. P.O. DePasqueale from the 72nd Precinct points out thatmany of the piers are unsafe and were thusunavailable for the public. %u201cThe piers are rundown and we will be using extra police tomake sure that people stay away from thewaterfront there,%u201d he says.DePasqueale is uncertain how many people will be out for the visuals on July 4 butsays police are expecting about 15,000 to20,000 people in the park and will be dispatching an extra hundred police officers perday to help direct traffic and confront thesame expected pickpocketing problem. %u201cThetraffic in the area will be very heavy becausethey are shutting down the Belt Parkway between 65th Street and Ocean Parkway to beused for viewing. The traffic will probablyspill over onto Third and Fourth Avenue,%u201d heexplains. There are endless number of details toremember for the four day celebration, notthe least to mention where to put the Port-OSans. %u201cWe%u2019ve requested 60 just for the Pier 8site,%u201d LoPreto says with a laugh. And ifeverything goes smooth for the Liberty bash,it will be in no small part due to some basicplanning here in the precincts.Help to FixUp Your HomeF in d It E very W e e k in th e N e ig h b o rh o o d S e rv ic e C la s s ifie d sStum ped A gain?
