Ruth Goldsteinspeaking for the S. Portland Street BlockAssociation criticized the scope of the DEISthat did not include the effects of pollutionand traffic on Fort Greene%u2019s historic district,in particular the impact of vibration andpollution on the trees and brownstones.Martin Goldstein, a 16-year Fort Greeneresident, echoed her complaints, saying:%u201cThe current project is building houses fornewcomers and protecting them from trafficand sending the traffic on to our streets.%u201d Hesuggested that mitigation measures be foundto alleviate the traffic stress on the community.Pam Miler, a member of Save Our Shops,predicted tnat the linear shopping stripswould be disastrously affected by the supermarket and retail space of the project. Comments on the DEIS made that evening will beaddressed in the Final EIS and additionalcomments will be accepted in writing by theboard until June 16.When the full board meets next week at6pm June 18 at the N.Y. Telephone Building,101 Willoughby St., its member will vote onthe eleven ULURP items for Rose%u2019s projects,approval will in essence mean approval ofthe project. They will vote on an amendmentto the Atlantic Terminal Urban RenewalPlan that would change land use on the site toaccommodate Rose%u2019s plans for commercialand residential structures, and on the disposition of City-owned property where Rose proposes to build approximately 2.1 millionsquare feet of office space in two towers onHanson Place and in four-story buildings onFlatbush and Atlantic Avenues. Thesebuildings will serve as the office and retailspace and will house the supermarket, the1000-car parking garage and the 10-screentheater.The New York City Housing Partnership isrequesting the disposition of the propertywhere Rose's fU3 onnHominiitryic will be builtwhich would subsequently be disposed to thecondominium owners.CHANGES SOME STREETSThe application pertaining to the amendments in the City Map would involve theestablishment of Cumberland Street betweenFulton and Atlantic Avenue, a new street between South Portland Avenue and South ElliotPlace and a new street between CumberlandStreet and South Portland Avenue, and theextension of South Oxford Street between thesecond new street and Atlantic Avenue.Amendments to the zoning map are also included for a vote that night and modificationsto the Zoning Resolution to ease setbackdistance and permit an encroachmentbeyond the sky exposure plan for the 24-storyoffice building on the comer of South ElliotPlace and Hanson Place, and for the 8-storyparking garage on Atlantic Avenue. The application would also permit construction ofthe garage.The board will also be voting on items pertaining to the Brooklyn Center project including the disposition of the City-owned property for the Rose%u2019s plan to build another 1.2million square feet of office and retail spaceand an additional 700 car parking facility.The amendment to the City map calls for theclosing of Rockwell Place between Fultonand Lafayette Avenue and a ten-foot widesidewalk easement on the east side of Flatbush Avenue between Fulton Street andLafayette Avenue.An application has also been put forth todelete the entire Special Brooklyn CenterDevelopment District from the zoning mapand requests for a permit to modify the initialsetback distance and permit encroachmentbeyond the sky exposure for the officebudding.
