At age 12 she was already realizing profits on the sale of her paintings. Now,she says, her multimedia work of the pastfew years has been %u201ctoo extreme%u201d for asingle piece to sell; but Piazza maintainsshe%u2019s happy making art for art%u2019s sake andstockpiling her creations.The exhibit is being shown through June28 at BACA Downtown, 111 WilloughbyStreet.It features paintings by Chris Chevins andAlain Masson and mixed media constructions by Chris Piazza and Ray Rapp. Theshow opened June 6 at the 111 WilloughbyStreet gallery and runs through June 28.Represented by six works in this fourperson show %u2014 BACA%u2019s second New Territory exhibit this year %u2014 Piazza specializesin puppets as art objects. There%u2019s actuallyjust one puppet in the show; more rivetingare her metaphorical scenes constructedwith beads, baubles, glitter, hand-mixedpaint, cheap found objects and assortedwhat-nots.%u201cSwan Lake%u201d is a bumper-car-o-rama ofhollow, blue glitter-coated plastic swans ona lake of gold glitter. Her %u201cCreek CharlieFields%u201d is a reconstruction of a house andsuit of clothes painted by the folk artist it isnamed for.Chevins describes the collision of the rational world and the irrational realm usingsuch methods as traditional perspective andalia prima paint, using both newspaperphotos and historical paintings as inspiration. In his Credit Memo, pillars of tornadoboth sweep down from and buttress a stormy sky dwarfing an insubstantial earthbelow.Masson documents street life, parades,couples in restaurants, snatches ofoverheard conversations and transformsthem into whimsical or ominous narrativeworks. In one a statue watches as a girldances down a path towards a fountain onthe fiery horizon. In another a nakedgiantess screams as a small figure plungesinto a fish-filled aquarium. Masson%u2019s%u201cDiaristic Drawing%u201d is a long strip ofdrawing paper on two rollers, a pen-and-inkchronicle laced with illustrations of newsevents, erotica, cartoons, sarcasm and dailymoods.Ray Rapp%u2019s %u201cThe Spectator Series%u201d iscomprised of five paper wall relief constructions and a painted wood sculpture.The exhibit is worth discovering %u2014 dropby for a visit.Artists Get Funding Help at Workshop SessionBACA/The Brooklyn Arts Council ishosting a full-day of workshops and a majorapplication seminar for borough artists onJune 18. %u201cProfessional Practices ExpandedWorkshops%u201d for visual artists, sponsored byThe Center for Arts Information, will beheld from 2-6pm; and the New York Foundation for the Arts%u2019 Fellowship ApplicationSeminar will follow from 7-9pm.Workshops led by professional artists andconsultants will offer step-by-step instructional strategies for visual artists. Topics include taking slides, writing a resume,writing an artist%u2019s statement, and moneymatters.The application seminar will offer practical advice to potential New York Statefellowship applicants. Artists eligible to apply must be at least 18 years old, and N.Y.State residents for at least two years. Thefellowship awards of $5000 are awarded infourteen artistic disciplines, with the intentto be used toward the development of theartist%u2019s career.The workshops and seminar will be heldin Room 124 of the Library Center of LongIsland University at Flatbush Ave. andDeKalb Ave. Both events are free. For information, or for applications call 788-3077.Kick Off Celebrate Brooklyn Outdoor Festival%u201cCelebrate Brooklyn,%u201d New York%u2019s mostextensive free performing arts festivalbegins its eighth summer season with adance series produced jointly with theBrooklyn Academy of Music. The series willinclude classical, modem, African, jazz andtheatre dance.
