Winemaking,” which ran in the Fall 2014
issue of Southern Oregon Magazine.
Part 2—The answer to the universal question?
Place your finger on Latitude 42 and follow it around the globe. You will pass through
Chicago, Cape Cod, Portugal, northern Spain, southern France, the Mediterranean,
various areas around the Black and Caspian Seas, Mongolia, China, North Korea, Sea
of Japan and—our region of southern Oregon. The 42nd parallel passes through some
of the finest wine regions on the planet, each with distinctions as well as similarities.
In the book Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Deep Thought is the super-computer tasked to
answer the ‘universal’ question, “What is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the uni-
verse and everything?” The answer comes back as “42”. Deep Thought, when questioned about
the preciseness of the answer quips, “That it is quite definitely the answer. I think the problem
is that you’ve never actually known what the question is.”
Might I suggest that if the question asked was, “Where can we find the answers to the complexi-
ties of the universe and life?” the answer could likely be resolved through honest and heartfelt
conversations over a local Rogue-style vintage. The answer to the universal question just might
be wine. White, red, rose—raise a glass to deep thought and Latitude 42!
