DAYS 4 & 5
DAY 6
On Day Four of the STEM Enrichment Trip for 2024, the group travelled to the Westmead
Medical Precinct for a day of biomedical science. The first site visited was the Westmead
Institute for Medical Research, where our students heard from researchers who
are finding new ways to treat diabetes, cancer, and more! After touring some of the
laboratories, they then visited the Children’s Medical Research Institute, where they
heard about more cutting-edge research, including proteomics and gene therapy. The day
concluded with some sightseeing around Circular Quay.
Day Five began with our group travelling to Port Kembla to tour Australia’s largest
steelworks, and learn about how this vital material is made. In the afternoon, they visited
the SEALiFE Sydney Aquarium before engaging in some retail therapy in the Sydney CBD.
Day Six saw our students visit one of the most significant STEM sites in Australia: ANSTO’s
research reactor at Lucas Heights. This exceptional opportunity allowed our students
to learn about nuclear medicine, neutron-beam research, and other applications of
the reactor. As darkness fell, our students visited the Mt Stromlo Observatory to view
the night sky using the site’s telescopes, tour a facility that can simulate the conditions
encountered in space, and hear from tertiary space science students share about their
STEM pathways.
The tour was an excellent experience for our students. We thank Mr and Mrs Hartley who
safely drove our group by bus across 4 states (over 3500kms), Miss Hunting who helped
look after everyone, and Mr Snudden for organising such a fantastic trip.
We also gratefully acknowledge the Commonwealth’s support in the form of funding
through the Sponsorship Grants for Student Science Engagement and International
Competitions 2024.
