For the love of peonies
Paeonia lactiflora 'Jacorma'
For the love of peonies
Big, puffy, in-your-face explosions of colour! Summer is truly on its way when
the peonies first bloom in spring. Such a direct approach to joyful colour,
and their lush, green foliage is a perfect compliment. Perennial doesn’t cover
it: peonies can survive and thrive for upwards of fifty years! Plants are not
demanding once they’re established. Thorough and deep watering is a must
in the spring, but water requirements decrease for the rest of the season.
The only weakness in the otherwise hardy peony plant is the stem; they are
sometimes not strong enough to carry such heavy flowers! Provide basic staking
or three-legged metal peony rings which allow the plant to grow through
the centre of the support. Peony plants are not great at change, but if you must
transplant, do it in the fall. There are several peony flower types, from single
to double blooms, barely fragrant at all to fairly intoxicating. Bask in the choice!
As a stand-alone or in a group planting, peonies are a one of a kind.
