Ask almost anyone what
their favourite vegetable
is in the garden, and the
answer will be tomatoes.
In salads, sandwiches, sauces,
tossed with pasta, made into
fresh salsa, on bruschetta
or sun-warmed straight
from the garden.
What a choice! Standard varieties
or cherry tomatoes, heirloom
or hybrid. Red, yellow, orange,
or a combination of all three.
Remember! Tomato plants hate
the cold, so don’t plant your
seedlings out till the earth
is warm – late spring or early
summer. You will need:
• Rich, well-drained fertile soil,
or peat-free potting compost.
• A sunny and sheltered location.
• To water deeply and regularly
(at the base of your plants,
avoiding the hottest time
of the day).
• To feed weekly with
a high-potash fertilizer when
plants come into flower.
