Cordyline, Cyperus and Fountain Grass
Cordyline
An architectural tropical beauty and highly decorative in a minimalist
design. Spiky, sword-like leaves are the dominant feature, in colours
ranging from green, white, yellow, red, purple and reddish purple.
Many Cordyline plants will also produce small, fragrant white, pink,
or lavender flowers. Superb as an exotic centerpiece in outdoor
containers, growing up to one meter tall.
Growing Conditions
• Light-filled location, though out of direct sunlight
• Rich, fresh, slightly damp, well-drained soil
• Plants can be repotted and brought indoors for the winter
Cyperus Papyrus
Papyrus is tall and handsome! A water-loving tropical plant
grown here as an annual. Aka the Umbrella Plant because
of its grass-like habit (it is not a true grass) and sprays
of foliage at the top of its rigid, triangular stems, radiating
out like the spokes of an umbrella. In containers or near water
features, Papyrus plants are fantastic at promoting a zen-like
atmosphere. Plants can be repotted and brought indoors
for the winter.
Growing Conditions
• Morning sun and partial shade
• Very damp, nearly water-soaked soil
Fountain Grasses (Pennisetum)
Ornamental Fountain Grasses are valued for the beauty and
height they bring to any arrangement. Not to mention their slightly
disheveled, wild appearance! Pennisetum are available in a range
of varieties, dwarf and full-size, from silvery to almost black, by way
of all shades of green, red, pink, purple and golden. Floral plumes,
airy and graceful, make these plants an attention magnet. Repot
and bring inside for the winter.
Growing Conditions
• Full sun or part shade
• Fresh, well-drained soil
• Cut back to 20 cm in the spring (for hardy varieties)
