Enset and Musa
The false banana (Enset) and the banana plant (Musa)
are fast-growing plants that quickly grow to impressive
sizes. They require plenty of water and sun to produce
their huge paddle-shaped leaves: green for Musa
and green-brown-burgundy-black with bright-red Enset, Musa and Senecio
veining for Enset. These architectural plants can
reach a height of 1 to 2 metres in our Quebec
climate. If you have the space, repot and bring
inside for the winter.
Growing Conditions
• Full sun or part shade, sheltered from the wind
• Very rich, well-drained soil
• Regular watering to maintain damp soil
• Add mulch and fertilize
Senecio
Senecio plants are succulents, a species
that includes many varieties suited to summer
container-growing in our climate. Leaves
can be deep green, bluish, or striped with lots
of variation in the shape. Some plants have
an upright habit and others a trailing habit.
Senecio plants have incredible versatility
from a design point of view and can coexist
in combination with many other plants. Excellent
tolerance to summer dry periods. Plants can
be repotted and brought inside for the winter.
Growing Conditions
• Full sun or part shade
• Dry, well-drained soil
• Intermittent watering: soil must dry out
between waterings
• Very good heat and drought tolerance
