The three-layered approach works amazingly well in container planting. It consists of combining
three kinds of plants for a three-tiered effect:

Thriller

The star of the arrangement!
Flower or foliage plant, or tall
ornamental grass with an upright
habit. Dramatic, unusual, or simply
spectacular; this plant grabs most
of the attention and should
supply vertical interest. Filler
The supporting role.
Medium-sized flowering
or foliage plants with a semi-erect
or mounding growth habit. Fillers
‘fill’ the space around the star of
the container and accentuate
the characteristics
of the thriller.

Spiller
The cascading element. Chiefly
foliage plants, though there are
some flowering exceptions. Spillers
bring the finishing touch to the
arrangement, balancing out
the effects of the other
two elements.
