5 Alocasia and Colocasia

Alocasia and Colocasia
Elephant Ears is the common name for these two closely related exotic
plants. Their exuberance comes naturally! Native to the rainforests
of Southeast Asia, these majestic plants can be admired in Quebec too,
grown either as annuals outside in the summer or as indoor plants. Foliage
can be ruffled, rough-textured, smooth or with marked veining, a single Colacasia 'Coffee Cups'
colour or with contrasting shades. The shape of their oversized leaves
is the clue to their name, and plants can grow to 1 to 2 metres tall. Highly
decorative, ideal as a focal interest plant, they provide a bold tropical
effect to any plant decor.
Growing conditions
• Full sun or partial shade
• Soil should be warm and damp but not soggy
• Plants are fantastic as the centrepiece of container arrangements
