As we celebrate 70 years of the ROK-US Alliance, I am proud to be here alongside
Ambassador Lee Shin Wha looking out into an audience that ref ects the closeness and
strength of our ties.

I hope my Department of Defense colleagues will allow me to borrow one of their phrases
as I close my remarks today. We must work together to tackle the challenge of North
Korean human rights – the US, the ROK, civil society and the whole of the international
community. So if I may, I will close by saying, as we work to promote human rights for
the North Korean people, “Katchi Kapshida” “We go together!” from the ROK-US
Alliance slogan.
