Aloha!

As Chairperson of the Global Strategy Special Committee of the Peaceful Unif cation
Advisory Council (PUAC), I sincerely welcome all of you to the North Korean Human
Rights Hawaii Conference 2023.

I would like to extend a special thanks to Ms. Suzanne Vares-Lum, President of the East-
West Center, Consul General Lee Seo-Young, and Mr. Park Bong Ryong, President of
the Hawaii Chapter of PUAC for co-hosting this meaningful event.

In addition, I want to thank Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke and Mayor Rick
Blangiardi for their welcome messages, as well as the distinguished members of the State
Legislature of Hawaii and the United States Congress, for sending us their congratulatory
and welcome messages.

I am also grateful to our keynote speakers, Ambassador Shin Wha Lee, Ambassador
Julie Turner, and Dean Morse Tan for being here today. We look forward to hearing
from them. And indeed, it is very meaningful to have the opportunity for them to share
their views and extensive experience with all of us on the topic of human rights in North
Korea.
