Life Events During the Year

With before-tax contributions, you can ONLY change your coverage during
the year if you have a change in family status as deined by current IRS
regulations, sometimes known as a “qualifying event.” Changes in family
status include:

z Birth, adoption or the placement of a child for adoption

z Marriage
z Divorce or legal separation

z Death of a dependent

z A dependent’s loss or gain of eligibility for other coverage
z A change in employment status for you or your spouse

z Enrollment in Medicare or Medicaid by you or your spouse

z A court order requiring you to cover an eligible dependent

Any change in coverage must be consistent with your eligible change in
family status. For example, if you have a baby, you may add your child to
your medical coverage; you may not remove your spouse from coverage
because of the birth of your child.

You will have 31 days from the date of the qualifying event to change your
beneits. If you miss that deadline, your next chance to make any changes
will be during the next Open Enrollment Period.

If you waive medical coverage for yourself or your eligible dependents
because you have coverage under another plan and later lose that coverage,
you can elect NISC coverage within 31 days upon proof of loss of your
other coverage. In addition, if you waive coverage now but later gain a

new dependent(s) through marriage, birth, or adoption, you may enroll
yourself and your dependents in NISC coverage within 31 days by providing
documentation for the new dependent(s).
