The Mystery
of the
Lost Wallet
(Meet Mavis Douglass – Taxi Driver)
Part I – The Call.
[ELECTRONIC MELODIC BEEPING]
The phone!
My heart raced at the thought that it was someone who needed a ride…
someone who had my number… and chose my company out of the five
options. After a year in business, the exhilaration was still there. The
excitement was more comfortable and familiar, but still there.
[INCOMING CALL: 419-555-9475]
Hmmmm… unfamiliar number…
I pressed the green button on my flip phone and spoke casually into its
microphone:
“Not Another Cab Company.”
A sea of background noise floated through the phone and into my ear.
“This is Brent at the Velveteen Amatista,” said a no-nonsense voice over
the sea of noise. “I’ve got a customer who needs a cab.”
“Hi Brent,” I said, trying to sound professional yet friendly. “I can get
someone there in 15 minutes. Do you know where they’re going?”
“Washington Hills, I think. Have the driver ask for me. I’m the bartender.”
