5/22/25, 4:39 PM UAE Launches National GI System to Protect, Promote Local Products
(IP) protection to these goods, the initiative aims to enhance economic diversification and
support sustainable development, in line with the country's “We the UAE 2031” vision.
The launch event, held with the participation of over 200 stakeholders, featured
government officials, IP experts, and representatives from local communities. Collaborating
entities included the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, Dubai Municipality,
Ras Al Khaimah Department of Economic Development, and the Environment Agency –
Abu Dhabi.
The first phase of GI tagging covers four key products: Hatta honey, Ras Al Khaimah
ceramics, Dabbas dates from Al Dhafra, and traditional palm frond crafts. These products
reflect the UAE’s cultural heritage and are known for their exceptional quality and
geographic origins.
Applications for GI registration are now open online through the Ministry’s website, with 25
more products under review. The system supports both local and international applications,
adhering to global IP standards.
By formalising GI protection, the UAE joins global efforts to preserve traditional knowledge,
promote artisanal industries, and empower local producers. The initiative also supports
SMEs, enhances export opportunities, and contributes to achieving UN Sustainable
Development Goals, particularly those focused on economic growth and innovation.
The Ministry emphasized that GI tags not only protect authenticity but also add value to
national products, helping the UAE position itself as a global hub for quality, innovation,
and heritage-driven economic development.
