How Dubai canals are saying goodbye to rubbish
Things are about to get a lot cleaner
By Sian TraynorMay 14, 2024
You will be able to enjoy crystal clear waters in Dubai very soon as a new remote-
controlled boat is launched to tackle water pollution.
In a bid to tackle a build-up of rubbish floating in Dubai’s creek and water canals, a
smart Dubai marine scraper has been introduced.
Allowing you to cruise along on an abra without looking down on an old tyre or plastic
bottle, the technology will keep areas cleaner and greener.

Operated from dry land, the boat will be sent out remotely to scrape and scoop up in
unwanted items on its own. From plastics to netting and everything in between, the 5G
system allows the boat to make precise manoeuvres in the water.
This will also protect fish and any other marine life, as sensors have been built-in to
prevent collisions.
The cleanup operation will be carried out on a large scale with over 35 kilometres of
canals to be worked on.
12 marine captains will take turns to operate the scraper from dry land, assisted by 25
workers and sailors and 12 marine vehicles.
Able to collect and transfer 1,000kg of floating waste, the aim of the project is to reduce
pollution and waste management in local waters.
Developed locally by Emirati talents in collaboration with Al Khattal Boat Factory, this
state-of-the-art scraper has been designed to represent a significant advancement in
the municipality’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Introduced by Dubai Municipality, the initiative is hoped to work towards improving
environmental beauty and quality of living for residents in the Emirate.
