H.E. Dherar Belhoul Al Falasi, Executive Director at Watani Al Emarat
Foundation, opened the session with a speech in which he emphasised the
transformative power of positive dialogue. Al Falasi also explored the UAE’s
commitment to diversity and harmony among its 200-plus nationalities.
During his keynote address, Al Falasi spoke to the conference’s broader
theme, underscoring the pivotal role of leaders in fostering tolerance for future
generations. He emphasised that “tolerance is embodied in our DNA as
Emiratis”.
Advocating for proactive measures, he said that the ongoing initiatives
introduce the importance of tolerance education, especially for children,
beginning ideally at the kindergarten level. Dr. Noura Nasir Al Karbi, Chair of
the Research Outreach Department at Sharjah University, stressed the crucial
role of communication channels in a discussion titled “Cultivating
Sustainability: Charting the Course for a Harmonious Civilisation”.
She emphasised the need for effective dialogue, stating: “We must open
channels of communication between institutions so that we can promote
efficient dialogue for future generations.” Dr. Al Karbi also emphasised the
proactive role of everyone in raising awareness, stating that while institutions
play a significant role in promoting social tolerance, individuals bear the
responsibility in benefitting the most from awareness campaigns. She also
pointed out the significant impact of educational institutions in promoting
values of tolerance and coexistence in national curricula.
Prof. Abdul Rahim Sabouni, President of Span Management Consulting
(SMC) and former Emirates College of Technology (ECT) President, provided
insights into the crucial role of tolerance and acceptance in the scientific,
engineering, and construction sectors. In line with Al Falasi, he stressed the
importance of starting tolerance education early and integrating it into various
spheres, including media, governmental plans, and education.
“It is easier when you start earlier... the issue of tolerance has become one of
the most important issues because it is the way for the future... You can feel
the differences in the university, as it accepts people from different
