There are no immediate plans to install new Salik toll gates after the launch of the
Dubai Metro, the emirate’s transport chief has said.
“We have no immediate plan to introduce Salik on more roads even after the metro
launch,” Mattar Al Tayer, chairman and executive director of the Dubai Roads and
Transport Authority (RTA), said in comments published by UAE daily Gulf News on
Thursday.
He told the paper that the RTA had no plan to increase charges on any of its existing
services and would also not introduce any new fees this year following instructions from
the government.
He said that reports in the market about the introduction of new Salik gates to
encourage motorists to use the new metro system were baseless.
However, Al Tayer did not completely rule out the possibility of having more Salik
controlled roads in future depending on the growth and trends in Dubai traffic.
“I cannot give any time frame as it all depends on the mobility needs in future. All I can
say is that we don’t take such decisions without conducting studies in advance,” he told
the paper.
