The report also includes a regional breakdown of the most significant outages:
Globally, the Facebook outage on March 5 was the most significant, with more than 11.1 million users
worldwide reporting issues. The Facebook and Instagram outages had the greatest impact in the Asia Pacific
region, followed by widespread disruptions to Microsoft 365 and local services such as PayPay and Jio.
The European region was affected by outages of Facebook and WhatsApp, as well as disruptions to services
from German telecom providers 1&1 and Deutsche Telekom.
In Latin America, disruptions to Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were widely felt, as were outages of local
services such as Bait and Nubank.
While the Microsoft 365 and Facebook outages had a significant impact on the Middle East and Africa region,
disruptions were also seen at local telecommunications providers such as Telkom, MTN and Vodacom.
In the United States and Canada, outages by Facebook, CrowdStrike, and AT&T were the most significant,
followed by disruptions to various gaming services and internet service providers. Notably, when a routine
Crowdstrike software update went awry on July 19, there were nearly five million user reports on Downdetector
related to services using Crowdstrike or Microsoft (including emergency services, airlines, and ride-sharing
apps).
“In such scenarios, early detection, problem isolation and communication with users become critical for telecom
operators and local service providers. With Downdetector Explorer, operators can understand the size and scope
of incidents and act quickly to resolve the issues that matter most to consumers,” said Farid.
